The Former Hino Clinic, located in Yufu City, Oita Prefecture, is a historic structure built in 1894 (Meiji 27). This two-story building, consisting of a main hall and a ward, was designated as a National Important Cultural Property in 1999. It stands as a premier example of "pseudo-Western architecture" (Giyofū kenchiku), where Western architectural styles are seamlessly blended with traditional Japanese techniques. Visitors can admire the Western-style design elements, such as the arched entrance porch, spiral staircases, and balconies, juxtaposed with exquisite Japanese decorations like the Unryu (cloud dragon) carvings and Kote-e (stucco relief) on the door pockets.
The facility holds a rich history preserved by a lineage of doctors dating back to the Edo period. It was constructed in 1894 by Kaname Hino, the third generation of the family. It is recognized as one of the oldest Western-style buildings in Oita Prefecture. This site is a precious cultural heritage that illustrates the advancement of architectural technology and medical practices during the Meiji era, a time when modern medicine began to spread throughout Japan.
The interior houses numerous exhibits that convey the daily life and medical practices of the era. The examination room features period-accurate beds and old X-ray machines, providing a visual understanding of the dawn of modern medicine. Additionally, the site features unique design elements, such as calligraphy by famous figures and a garden pond designed to look like specific characters when viewed from above. The striking contrast between the Western-style porch and the internal spiral staircase offers a unique visual experience found nowhere else.

To protect the historical structure and exhibits, please follow all local photography rules. Admission fees are 300 JPY for high school students and above, and 150 JPY for elementary and junior high school students. It is highly recommended to check the opening hours and closing days (Mondays, Tuesdays, and New Year holidays) before your visit.
