The Former Hakodate Ward Public Hall is a stunning colonial-style Western building completed in 1910 (Meiji 43). Designed by Chojiro Konishi, it is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Located in the Motomachi district of Hakodate, the building is a celebrated landmark that preserves the atmosphere of the Meiji and Taisho eras. Inside, visitors can admire a collection of furniture and decorative items that transport them back in time.
Completed in 1910, this facility has served as a central hub for community gatherings and local events for many years. In 1974, its significant architectural and historical value was officially recognized with its designation as a National Important Cultural Property. The building stands as a symbol of the era when Hakodate flourished as an international port city, blending Western and Japanese influences.
The interior showcases exquisite furniture and ornaments that represent the culture of the early 20th century. The architectural structure itself, with its beautiful colonial-style design and decorative details, is a major attraction. Additionally, the facility houses the 'Haikara Costume Museum,' where visitors can experience the fashion of the era firsthand.
Opening hours vary by season. During the Summer season (April 1 to October 31), the hall is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with extended hours until 7:00 PM on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. During the Winter season (November 1 to March 31), the closing time is moved to 5:00 PM. Please check the schedule before visiting as closing times change seasonally. The facility is closed during the New Year holidays (December 31 to January 3).
Visitors can take memorable photographs within this historic setting. The venue also accepts requests for commemorative photography, such as wedding photos. The Costume Museum offers a unique service to try on traditional 'Haikara' (high-collar/Western-influenced) clothing from the Meiji and Taisho periods (please check the official website for details).
The Motomachi area of Hakodate is dotted with numerous historical buildings. Nearby landmarks include the Former British Consulate (Kaikai Memorial Hall), the Northern Ethnology Museum, and various literary museums. There is often a common ticket system available that allows entry to these nearby sites with your admission ticket to the Former Hakodate Ward Public Hall.
When taking photos inside the building, please be mindful of the privacy of other visitors and staff. Photography, video recording, and live streaming are strictly prohibited inside the Costume Museum. Furthermore, photography while wearing the costumes is not permitted outside the facility. For your comfort, we recommend wearing walking-friendly shoes as it is a historical structure. Please note that payments for the Costume Museum services must be made in cash only.
