Hakodate's modern history began with the opening of the port in 1859. Originally, the British Consulate was located near the current site of the Orthodox Church of the Holy Mother, but due to various factors including fires, the consulate moved to its current location. A new consulate was built nearby in 1885, and the current building was completed in 1913. After its role as a consulate ended in 1934, the building underwent various uses, including serving as a hospital after the war, before eventually becoming the museum it is today.
Inside the building, visitors can find exhibits detailing the history of the consulate. The structure maintains the architectural style of 1913, featuring exquisite designs and layouts that preserve the atmosphere of that era. The facility is open year-round, but please note that operating hours vary by season. From April to October, it is open until 7:00 PM, and from November to March, it closes at 5:00 PM.
