Oku-Susobana Nature Park is a serene natural sanctuary located in the upper reaches of the Susobana River in Kinasato, Nagano City. Surrounded by lush beech forests, the park features a complex ecosystem of five distinct ponds, wetlands, and waterways. Its most remarkable feature is the massive colony of Skunk Cabbage (Mizubasho), which is one of the largest in the Honshu region. Recognized as one of the "100 Best Hidden Gems of Japan," the park offers a profound sense of tranquility. As the spring snow melts, the emergence of the striking white Skunk Cabbage flowers creates a breathtaking spectacle that captivates all who visit.
The area has long been preserved to protect its rich natural heritage. Situated at the headwaters of the Susobana River, the landscape of sprawling beech forests represents a precious natural legacy of Japan's original scenery. The high density of naturally growing Skunk Cabbage makes this a vital site for ecological preservation. The changing seasons reflect the deep connection between the local community and its environment, making it a place where the beauty of nature is both celebrated and protected.
The park is composed of several scenic spots, including Hyotan Pond, Yoshi Pond, Ima Pond, and the Koumihei Wetland, each offering a unique perspective of the natural landscape. During the peak Skunk Cabbage season, the sight of white blossoms blanketing the vast wetlands is a major draw for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike. The harmony between the deep green of the beech forest and the crystal-clear mountain water provides a deeply refreshing experience.
The ideal time to visit is from late April to early June. The peak bloom of the Skunk Cabbage usually occurs around the Golden Week holidays, offering the best chance to see the massive white colonies. In May, you can experience the powerful energy of nature as the snow melts. We recommend exploring the park during daylight hours (8:30 AM to 5:00 PM). Since there are no streetlights within the park, it is crucial to finish your walk before sunset. Please also check local weather reports, as some snow may still remain in the area depending on the year.
Visitors can enjoy trekking along well-maintained mountain paths. From the sightseeing bus center, it is approximately a 20-minute walk (or a 5-minute shuttle bus ride) to the park entrance. From there, you can trek toward the wetlands and ponds to fully immerse yourself in the sounds of the water and the scent of the beech forest. It is a perfect place for slow, mindful observation of seasonal plants and natural formations.
The surrounding area includes the beautiful Oku-Susobana Valley and the Oku-Susobana Dam. As the area is best accessed by car, we recommend planning a route that includes other scenic spots along the Susobana River to fully enjoy the natural beauty of Nagano.
As the paths include unpaved sections and stairs, sturdy walking shoes or trekking shoes are essential. Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for light hiking. Payments for parking are made in cash at the toll booth located before the entrance. As this is a protected natural area, please follow strict etiquette: do not pick plants and ensure you carry all trash back with you. Please note that the terrain is not suitable for wheelchairs.
