Okusa Castle Ruins Park is a park centered around the remains of a flatland mountain castle, utilizing the natural terrain of Nakagawa Village, Nagano Prefecture. The park was developed on the site of Okusa Castle, which played a pivotal role during the Nanboku-cho period (Northern and Southern Courts period). Today, it is a place where historical remains and lush nature coexist beautifully. One of its most captivating features is the breathtaking view of the majestic Central Alps mountains in the background.
Okusa Castle was established as a vital stronghold for the Kosaka clan, who ruled the territories of Okuya and Nakagawa during the Nanboku-cho period. Kosaka Takamune famously provided protection to Prince Murakoshi of the Southern Court, who used this location as a strategic base for numerous military operations. Positioned as a crucial military and economic point facing Northern Court forces across the Tenryu River, the castle's history is deeply etched in the land. After the castle was abandoned following the Oda clan's invasion in 1581, the site has been preserved and developed into the historical park seen today.
The park features various areas including the 'Cherry Blossom Plaza,' 'Four Seasons Plaza,' and 'Lawn Plaza.' Visitors can explore the historical structures of the castle ruins while enjoying the lush greenery. The view of the Central Alps with lingering snow is a famous spot for photographers. Additionally, a monument dedicated to Prince Murakoshi is installed, serving as a testament to the profound history that once unfolded in this very location.
The park is home to over 200 cherry trees, including more than 10 different varieties such as Somei Yoshino and Edo Heigan. Because these varieties bloom at different times, the period for enjoying the blossoms is relatively long. In spring, the striking contrast between the white snow on the Central Alps and the colorful cherry blossoms creates an unforgettable landscape. In the past, the area has also hosted events such as night illuminations and tent markets.
The park is designed for both learning and relaxation. Visitors can walk through the historical castle ruins to feel the strategic importance of this former military stronghold while enjoying a peaceful stroll through nature. The open lawns and scenic paths make it an ideal place for a relaxing outdoor experience.
Located in the southern part of Nagano Prefecture within the Ina Valley region, Okusa Castle Ruins Park is surrounded by the scenic landscapes of Nakagawa Village. The area is known for its rich natural beauty and traditional atmosphere. Access is typically via the JR Iida Line.
The park utilizes natural terrain. While there are maintained paths and plazas, some areas near the castle ruins may have uneven ground. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
