Okuhida Kuma Bokujo is a specialized bear zoo located in the Shin-Hirayu Onsen area of Okuhida Onsen-go, Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. It is renowned for its significant scale in raising Asian black bears, with approximately 90 bears living on the premises. Guided by the philosophy of "meeting a bear in the forest one day," the facility provides an environment where you can observe the natural ecology of bears from a very close distance within a lush, natural setting.
Established in 1976, this facility has dedicated decades to the breeding and exhibition of bears. Currently, the center focuses primarily on Asian black bears, serving not just as an exhibition site but also as an educational resource for sharing knowledge about bear ecology with society. While the facility has previously hosted various species like Kodiak brown bears and raccoons, it is now specialized in the display and study of the Asian black bear.
The park features several specialized areas, including the "Mori no Kuma Stadium," an all-weather facility where educational presentations take place, as well as multiple enclosures and a photo studio. One of the most famous attractions is the "Learning Presentation (Show)." Watching the bears perform tasks such as identifying numbers, riding bicycles, using swings, or even doing handstands and riding tricycles is a rare and captivating sight that draws many visitors. Additionally, the photo studio allows you to take commemorative photos with bear cubs; even if you didn't bring a camera, staff can assist with photography using food as an incentive. The park also features taxidermy displays for educational purposes.
Okuhida Kuma Bokujo is open year-round, but the experience varies by season. From spring to autumn, the interaction with bear cubs becomes a highlight. Around May, you can often see several-month-old cubs, offering a chance to see their adorable growth stages. Because the "Mori no Kuma Stadium" is an all-weather facility, the shows can be enjoyed even during the snowy winter months.
Visitors can engage in direct interaction through feeding experiences using cookies or dried fruits, allowing you to feel the presence of the bears closely. The photo session with bear cubs is a unique experience exclusive to this facility. For souvenirs, the shop "Kuma no Sato" offers unique items, such as products made from bear oil and the famous "Kumaryoku Drink," known as a nutritious tonic.
The facility is situated in the Shin-Hirayu Onsen area of Okuhida Onsen-go. The surrounding area is filled with traditional hot spring inns (ryokan) and breathtaking natural scenery, making it an ideal stop during a sightseeing trip. It is easily accessible via routes from Takayama City or the Matsumoto area.
Since the park is located in a natural environment, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Depending on the season, bringing warm clothing or rain gear is highly recommended. Please follow all facility rules to ensure the safety of both the bears and the visitors.
