Okutono Jinya is a cultural facility in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, that preserves the history of the former Okutono clan's administrative office (Jinya). Today, it serves as a museum showcasing historical Shoin-style architecture, beautiful Japanese gardens, and local historical artifacts. In 1985, a historical Shoin-style building was relocated and reconstructed here to open as a tourist destination. Surrounded by lush nature, it offers a tranquil atmosphere where visitors can experience the elegance of traditional Japanese architectural styles and garden design.
The roots of this site date back to the Edo period. The history began with Shinji Matsudaira, who served Tokugawa Hidetada, establishing a residence in the O-mae area. The current Jinya site in Okutono, Okazaki, was completed in 1707 (the 4th year of the Hoei era). The history of the Okutono clan continued until the relocation of the clan during the Meiji Restoration. The Shoin building currently on-site was originally part of the Ryokei-in temple in Okazaki and is a precious cultural asset that preserves the architectural styles of that era. Furthermore, the history of the site is marked by the legacy of Matsudaira Norimoru, a former lord who contributed significantly to the establishment of the predecessor of the Japanese Red Cross Society.
Visitors can enjoy various exhibits that illustrate the lifestyle and culture of the Edo period. Glass display cases house ancient documents, photographs, ceramics, and daily tools, allowing for a visual learning experience of local history. The architectural value is also significant; the interior space, illuminated by warm traditional paper pendant lights, offers a nostalgic atmosphere. Outside, the beautiful Japanese garden is a must-see. Featuring ponds, water edges, and diverse plant life, the garden presents a different face in every season, creating a harmonious landscape with the buildings.
We highly recommend visiting during different seasons to enjoy the changing scenery. The garden is particularly stunning during the spring (April–May) when plants sprout, and in autumn (October–November) when the foliage turns vibrant colors. During daylight hours, the light streaming through the windows highlights the greenery and the intricate details of the architecture. For those seeking true serenity, visiting on a weekday morning is ideal to avoid crowds.
Beyond sightseeing, you can enjoy moments of relaxation in a traditional Japanese setting. You can spend a peaceful time gazing at the gardens or the Shoin architecture. The facility also includes a small shop and dining area where you can rest while experiencing local flavors. Through the historical exhibits, visitors can deepen their understanding of the culture of Japanese samurai and daimyo.
Okutono Jinya is part of the Murasakiyama Natural Park, an area rich in nature. The surrounding area includes historical burial sites and remnants of old castle fortifications (earthworks), making it a great spot for a historical walking tour. Nearby attractions, such as rose gardens, allow for a perfect blend of nature and history.
