Okinoshima Island is a beautiful island belonging to the Amami Islands in the Oshima District of Kagoshima Prefecture. Located north of Okinawa Main Island, it is renowned for providing rare opportunities to encounter wildlife such as sea turtles and humpback whales. The name of the island has a long-standing history; in 1973, the mayor of Wотоbi Town officially confirmed 'Okinoshima' as the correct designation. Locally, the area is often referred to simply as 'Erabu' and is divided into two municipalities: Wadomari Town and Chinmi Town. The history of the island, which has long existed in harmony with nature, continues to be preserved through its local traditions and culture.
The island is dotted with scenic spots where you can enjoy the magnificent formations of nature. The primary attractions revolve around activities within the sea and the unique geological landscapes. While the Airport Line and the Chinmi/Kunigami lines run throughout the day, other routes may only operate in the morning or function as demand-responsive transport (reservation-based) in the afternoon. Therefore, careful planning is required based on your destination.
