Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is located within the Ocean Expo Park on the Motobu Peninsula in northern Okinawa Island. The name 'Churaumi' translates to 'beautiful sea' in the Okinawan dialect, reflecting the facility's mission to showcase the stunning marine ecosystems of the region. The highlight is the 'Kuroshio Sea' tank, a massive exhibit where giant marine creatures like whale sharks (reaching up to 8.6m in length) and manta rays swim. This tank is truly spectacular, measuring 35m in length, 27m in width, and 10m in depth, viewed through a massive 8.2m high and 60cm thick acrylic panel that provides an immersive experience.
The facility has deep roots in the 1975 Okinawa International Ocean Expo. Originally opened in 1979 as the 'National Okinawa Ocean Expo Memorial Park Aquarium,' the facility underwent a major transformation. In November 2002, it reopened under its current name, 'Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium,' following the construction of a new wing to accommodate modern research and display needs. The aquarium operates with a mission to protect and pass on the knowledge of Okinawa's precious marine resources to future generations.
The most iconic feature is the 'Kuroshio Sea' tank, where migratory fish such as whale sharks, rays, and sharks dominate the view. The scale of the display allows visitors to feel the immense power of the ocean. The aquarium also showcases unique research-based displays, including the exhibition of oceanic manta rays and spotted eagle rays. Beyond the main tank, the surrounding Ocean Expo Park offers diverse exhibits, including the Manatee Tank, the Sea Turtle Tank, and the Okichan Theater, where lively dolphin shows are performed.
While the aquarium is open year-round, the experience changes with the seasons. For instance, there are specific periods for coral breeding exhibitions. Ocean Expo Park is a large complex with many attractions. You can enjoy the dolphin shows at 'Okichan Theater' or explore the 'Dolphin Lagoon,' 'Manatee Tank,' and 'Sea Turtle Tank.' These facilities are all within walking distance and can be enjoyed as part of a full day of exploration within the park.
While the aquarium exhibits are primarily indoors, you will be walking outdoors to move between different sections of the park. Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
