The Okhotsk Ryuhyo Museum, situated on Mt. Tento in Abashiri City, Hokkaido, is a specialized facility focused on the natural phenomena of drift ice and the unique marine life of the Sea of Okhotsk. The museum is designed to help visitors understand the natural environment brought by drift ice and the biological diversity that thrives within it. A standout feature is the massive 5-screen theater, totaling 400 inches, which provides a breathtaking visual experience. Additionally, the Drift Ice Experience Terrace recreates a freezing environment of -15°C, allowing you to physically feel the harshness and beauty of the Arctic waters. This combination of visual and tactile stimulation makes the museum a truly unique destination.
The facility was established to educate the public about the 'drift ice' phenomenon, which is a defining characteristic of the Sea of Okhotsk. It serves as a vital center for environmental education in the Abashiri area, providing deep insights into the seasonal changes and the complex marine ecosystems. For many years, the museum has played a key role in preserving and sharing the knowledge of regional natural history with both domestic and international visitors.
The museum features several interactive and educational exhibits:
Operating hours vary by season. During the summer (May to October), the facility is ideal for enjoying the bright daytime scenery. During the winter (November to April), it is the peak season for observing the drift ice. If you wish to see the actual drift ice, a visit between January and March is highly recommended. Since the scenery from Mt. Tento changes significantly depending on the time of day and weather, we recommend checking the forecast before your visit.
Visitors can explore the Sea of Okhotsk through multiple senses. From the immersive 5-screen theater to the tactile experience of the freezing terrace, the museum offers a multi-sensory journey. There is also an on-site restaurant and shop where you can enjoy local food and purchase unique souvenirs.
