Okawara Kogen is a beautiful highland plateau located in Sanai Village, Myodo District, Tokushima Prefecture, at an altitude of approximately 1,020 meters. Situated about an hour's drive from Tokushima City and a 20-minute climb up the Asahigaru mountain road, it is considered one of the closest places to the sky in the region. This vast plateau reveals a different face with every season, making it a popular destination for a refreshing summer retreat. Visitors can enjoy sweeping mountain vistas, a brilliant starry sky at night, and a mesmerizing view of the city lights below.
The region is characterized by a rich natural environment, with the terrain sloping gently eastward from the summit of Mount Asahigaru (1,019m). Okawara Kogen is a significant local landmark, selected as the 16th spot in the 'Shikoku 88 Scenic Views' and also featured in the 'Tokushima 88 Scenic Views.' In recent years, the landscape has also become characterized by the coexistence of nature and energy, with the construction of the 'Okawara Wind Farm,' a large-scale wind power facility.
The charms of Okawara Kogen change depending on when you visit. One of the most iconic sights is the field of approximately 30,000 hydrangeas that bloom from early to late July. Due to the acidic soil of the region, the hydrangeas tend to bloom in a stunning blue hue, allowing visitors to walk through a sea of flowers that mirror the color of the sky. At night, you can observe the stars using telescopes at the Hilltop House, and special stargazing events are held during the summer. Additionally, the breathtaking night view of Tokushima and the beautiful sunrises and sunsets are must-see experiences.
The best time to visit is from May to October. The plateau is particularly recommended during the summer months when it offers a cool and refreshing climate. The appeal of the location shifts with the time of day: enjoy the blue hydrangeas and mountain scenery during the day, and the brilliant starry sky and city lights at night. In the early morning or evening during summer, the environment becomes truly mystical with the sounds of the Higurashi cicadas.
You can enjoy nature walks and stargazing in this serene environment. The Hilltop House provides facilities for astronomical observation, offering a deep connection to the cosmos. Depending on the season, you may also encounter blooming plants such as the Awamitsubatsutuji (Azalea) or Katakuri (Dogtooth Violet). Spending a quiet moment surrounded by nature is a unique experience found only here.
The surrounding area is dotted with spots where you can feel the essence of Sanai Village's nature. For instance, the 'Okawara Living Environment Conservation Forest' is recognized as one of the top 100 forests for forest bathing, making it ideal for those seeking deep relaxation. Routes can also be planned to visit other nature-rich areas in Tokushima, such as Kamikatsu Town.
As this is a high-altitude area, please be mindful of temperature changes depending on the season and time of day. When visiting in summer, it is highly recommended to wear long sleeves and long pants to protect yourself from insects and snakes.
