The history of Nishikigoi dates back to the early 19th century during the Edo period. It is said that the tradition began in the regions of present-day Ojiya and Nagaoka in Niigata Prefecture, when color mutations appeared in fish originally raised for food. Through the centuries, the unique environment of snowy Ojiya helped foster deep research and refinement of the species. Today, Ojiya is recognized globally as a prestigious brand for Nishikigoi, highly respected by enthusiasts both in Japan and abroad.

While the Nishikigoi are on display year-round, the experience changes with the seasons. Special exhibitions are held in spring and autumn. In spring, you can witness the 'Tatekoi' (strong-bodied koi) at the 'Echigo Ojiya Tatekoi Oriori,' featuring fish that have survived the harsh winter. In autumn, the 'Niigata Prefecture Nishikigoi Exhibition' brings together exceptional specimens from across the prefecture. Visiting during these specific times allows you to witness the highest level of breeding artistry.
The facility offers a unique koi feeding experience. When you feed them, you can watch the fish gather at the surface in a mesmerizing display. Please note that fish food is sold in limited quantities and is only available until the stock runs out. Additionally, due to seasonal changes or fish health management, the sale of food may be restricted, so we recommend checking the availability upon arrival.
