The Oitaya Rice Terraces, located in Yoshika Town, Yasugi District, Shimane Prefecture, is a scenic area recognized as one of the 'Top 100 Rice Terraces of Japan.' This area spans approximately 10 hectares, characterized by a continuous sequence of rice paddies constructed with stone walls. While it is said that during the Edo period, the area once boasted over 1,000 paddies covering up to 17 hectares, today the 630 stone-built paddies create a magnificent and serene landscape. This location is a quintessential symbol of the traditional Japanese rural landscape, utilizing the natural topography to create a unique architectural beauty.
The history of these terraces is remarkably ancient, having been constructed between the Muromachi period and the feudal era. With a history of approximately 600 years, the current landscape has been maintained through centuries of meticulous stone wall repairs and reinforcements. Historically, the quality of the rice harvested here was so high that it was famously presented as tribute to the lords of the Tsuwano Clan. The sophisticated stone-stacking techniques and the deep-rooted rice cultivation culture represent a way of life that has coexisted with nature for generations.
The greatest attraction is the panoramic view of the stone-walled terraces seen from the observation deck. The way the paddies are carved into the mountain slopes along the contour lines creates a stunning display of natural geometry. The sight of multiple layers of rice fields separated by stone walls is a view unique to this region. Additionally, the local climate, characterized by significant temperature fluctuations between day and night and ample sunlight, provides the ideal environment for high-quality rice production.
The appearance of the terraces changes dramatically with the seasons. From spring to early summer, you can witness a beautiful sight where the sky reflects in the water-filled paddies. In October, the 'Tanada Matsuri' (Rice Terrace Festival) is held, offering a lively atmosphere alongside the golden scenery of ripening rice ears. For the best experience, visit during bright daylight hours to clearly observe the intricate details of the stone walls and the vastness of the landscape.
The primary way to enjoy the Oitoya Rice Terraces is by taking in the view from the observation deck. The path to the deck includes wooden stairs, leading to a vista that makes you feel the presence of the original rural landscape preserved by many generations. It is an excellent spot for photography enthusiasts looking to capture a landscape that exists in perfect harmony with nature.
There are many nature-rich spots nearby. You can enjoy the clear waters of the Takatsu River at 'Suigen Park,' relax at the 'Muikaichi Onsen Yu-ra-ra' hot spring, or explore the historic castle town of 'Tsuwano.' A scenic driving route that includes visiting local hot springs and cafes after viewing the terraces is highly recommended.
To reach the observation deck, you will need to climb wooden stairs. As the terrain can be uneven, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since the area is a natural environment, please bring clothing suitable for the season.
