Oike Wild Bird Forest is a vast 115-hectare natural sanctuary located at the foot of Mt. Takachiho in Miyazaki Prefecture. Established in 1972, it is one of only four National Designated Wild Bird Forests in Japan, designed to balance nature conservation with observation. The area features a deep, lush forest of evergreen broad-leaved trees such as oak and evergreen oak, creating a perfect habitat for diverse flora and fauna alongside the stunning crater lake, Oike. With well-maintained walking paths and observation huts, it offers a profound connection to nature throughout the seasons.
Situated at the base of the sacred Mt. Takachiho, this region has a long history of coexistence with nature. Local legends even suggest that the area known as 'Koshi Port' was a place where Emperor Jimmu played during his childhood. The area was specifically developed as a National Designated Wild Bird Forest to protect the ecosystem of the crater lake and its surrounding habitats. For decades, it has served as a vital site for both environmental preservation and scientific observation.
There are several iconic spots within the forest. The 'Wild Bird Observation Hut' is a highlight, providing an ideal environment to observe 151 recorded species, including the vibrant red Verditer Flycatcher. Nearby, you will find water stations for the birds. Another must-see is the 'Forest Giant,' an Ichii-gashi tree estimated to be over 160 years old, boasting a circumference of 402 cm and a height of 38 m. Finally, the scenery of Lake Oike is unforgettable; the deep crater lake reflects the surrounding mountains and Mt. Takachiho, offering a serene view from the shores of Koshi Port.
The forest displays a different face in every season. From spring to summer, enjoy the lively bird songs and the lush greenery of the evergreen forests, which is an excellent time to spot summer birds like the Verditer Flycatcher. In autumn and winter, the landscape changes with the shifting colors of deciduous trees and the crisp, clear air that makes the view of Lake Oke exceptionally sharp and beautiful.
Hiking is the primary activity here. The well-maintained trails allow for a relaxing forest bath (shinrin-yoku). The full loop is approximately 12.3 km and takes about 3 hours and 20 minutes to complete. For those seeking water-based activities, boats and kayaks are available near Koshi Port, allowing you to experience the tranquil lake from a different perspective. It is also a popular spot for fishing, offering a close encounter with the lakeside ecosystem.
Oike Wild Bird Forest is part of the Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park. The surrounding landscape is defined by volcanic topography, including Mt. Takachiho, and features facilities like the Oike Campground. Staying overnight in a camp allows for a much deeper immersion into the natural environment of this volcanic region.
