Oike Park is a vast urban park covering approximately 24.8 hectares, located in the heart of Tokai City, Aichi Prefecture. At its center lies the Ota-ike Pond, surrounded by lush natural forests and scenic walking paths. Since its completion in 1973, it has been a beloved relaxation spot for local citizens. The park features a diverse array of seasonal flora: enjoy the elegant plum and cherry blossoms in spring, and the vibrant iris flowers in early summer. Additionally, near the City Hall side, ten striking iron sculptures are placed within the grassy areas, adding a unique artistic touch to the landscape.
The development of the area around Oita-ike began in 1969 during the formation of the current Tokai City, with the park's full development completed in 1973. The park serves as a vital community hub, surrounded by public facilities such as the Tokai City Hall, the Tokai City Central Library, and the Tokai City Municipal Heated Pool. It also holds cultural significance as part of the 'Flower Path to Visit Heishu and the Great Buddha,' a walking route that connects to the nearby Jurakuen Park.
Oike Park offers various attractions for every visitor. The centerpiece is the Ota-ike Pond and its surrounding natural environment. The park is home to a rich botanical collection, including 300 plum trees, 1,100 cherry trees, and over 4,000 iris plants. For nature enthusiasts, the 'Animal House' and the 'Natural History Museum' provide excellent opportunities for observation. Furthermore, the iron sculptures scattered across the lawn create a distinctive and artistic landscape that sets this park apart from others.
The park's appearance changes beautifully with the seasons. We highly recommend visiting during spring (March to April) to see the blooming cherry blossoms, or in early summer (May to June) to witness the irises in full bloom. In August, the park becomes a lively center for the 'Tokai Festival Fireworks Display,' offering a spectacular night view. While the park itself is open 24 hours a day, please note that sports facilities have seasonal operating hours. For example, from May 1st to October 31st, the facilities are available from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM (with the baseball field staying open until 9:00 PM).
Visitors can enjoy a wide range of activities. The park is well-equipped with sports facilities, including baseball fields and tennis courts. You can also enjoy a peaceful stroll along the paths to observe the seasonal plants and the pond. There are also play areas for children, making it a great destination for families. Additionally, the proximity to the Tokai City Central Library and the heated pool allows for a well-rounded day of both cultural and physical activities.
Conveniently located next to several public institutions, the park is adjacent to the Tokai City Hall, the Central Library, the Tokai City Agriculture Center, and the Municipal Heated Pool. This makes the area a perfect blend of public services and natural beauty. Access by car is also very easy via the Nishi-Chita Industrial Road or the K家 (Kake) Interchange.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing suitable for walking or light exercise. While the park provides multi-purpose toilets with wheelchair-accessible handrails and diaper-changing stations, please bring any personal necessities you may need. If you plan to use the sports facilities (baseball or tennis), please note that advanced reservations and fees may be required. Photography is generally permitted, but please be mindful of other visitors and maintain public etiquette. The park is designed with accessibility in mind, featuring wheelchair-friendly entrances and multi-purpose restrooms.
