Mount Ohira (Ohirayama) is the highest peak in Hofu City, standing at an altitude of 631 meters. The summit park is renowned as one of the premier viewpoints in the region. The location offers a vast, sweeping landscape that allows visitors to look out over the Set of Inland Sea, stretching from Shunan City to the east toward Yamaguchi and Ube cities to the west. In 2004, the area was fully renovated into a multi-purpose park equipped with spacious lawn areas and a playground, providing a perfect environment to enjoy the natural scenery and fresh air.
Historically, this area has been cherished as a vital observation point for the local community. The summit area is a rich natural environment that also houses a major regional television broadcasting station and nearby ranching areas. Following its significant renovation in 2004, the site evolved from a simple viewpoint into a versatile park where families and tourists can spend quality time immersed in nature. It is worth noting that for maintenance and management reasons, the facility has historically implemented nighttime closures to preserve the environment and ensure safety.

The greatest attraction is the breathtaking panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea. From the summit, you can observe the unique coastal topography and the charming cityscape below. Another iconic feature is the 'Azalea' display. Approximately 100,000 azalea plants are cultivated here, turning the entire mountain into a vibrant sea of color during the spring season. Additionally, the renovated lawn areas and children's play equipment provide an open, inviting space for visitors to relax and enjoy the outdoors.
The highlight of the year is undoubtedly May. During the 'Ohirayama Azalea Festival,' the 100,000 azaleas reach full bloom, offering one of the most colorful and spectacular landscapes in the prefecture. Visiting in May allows you to experience the peak of natural beauty. Please be advised that since February 2023, the park and parking areas have been closed during nighttime hours for management purposes. Therefore, it is highly recommended to plan your visit during the bright daylight hours to enjoy the view.

The park is designed for relaxation and recreation. With its well-maintained lawn areas and playground equipment, it serves as an excellent spot for families with children to play and unwind in a natural setting. Visitors can also enjoy leisurely strolls while taking in the expansive views or engage in landscape photography. The peaceful atmosphere makes it a wonderful place for a quiet escape from daily life.
Mount Ohira is situated on the border between Hofu City and Shunan City. Below the mountain lies the Ohirayama Tunnel, a key transport link for the Sanyo Expressway and the Sanyo Shinkansen line. The surrounding Hofu area is also rich in culture, featuring many historic temples and shrines. A great way to spend a day is to combine a visit to the summit for the views with a cultural exploration of the nearby historical sites.

When visiting Ohirayama Summit Park, comfortable walking shoes and casual, easy-to-move-in clothing are highly recommended. As it is a natural mountain environment, it is wise to bring layers to adapt to changing temperatures. Please plan your arrival during the daytime, as the parking lots and the park itself are closed at night. While the park is a natural space, please remember to carry your trash back with you to help preserve the environment. If you plan to visit nearby facilities or local shops, carrying cash is recommended as some may not accept cards.
