Ohama Beach is a premier seaside destination located in Sumoto City, Hyogo Prefecture. The area is famous for its breathtaking scenery of white sand and green pine trees, earning it the prestigious certification as one of 'Japan's Best Swimming Beaches' by the Ministry of the Environment. The coastline is notably shallow and the waves are gentle, providing an exceptionally safe and pleasant environment for swimming. The beach stretches approximately 750 meters along the north-south axis, offering an expansive and open landscape for leisure activities.
This coastal area has long been cherished for its rich natural beauty. The landscape is framed by the majestic Mount Mikuma, and the view from the Sumoto Castle ruins is celebrated as one of the 'Eight Views of Sumoto,' highlighting the area's historical and aesthetic importance. Furthermore, the proximity to the Sumoto Onsen hot spring district has allowed the area to develop into a sophisticated destination where traditional hot spring culture meets modern seaside leisure.
The shoreline is lined with 'Senbonmatsu' (thousand pine trees), creating a striking color contrast between the deep green foliage and the blue sea. The swimming season typically runs from mid-July to the end of August (for the 2025 season, it is scheduled from July 11 to August 31). Please note that for safety and regulation, activities such as fishing are strictly prohibited during the official swimming season. It is recommended to visit during these peak summer months to fully enjoy the coastal atmosphere.
Beyond swimming in the sea, visitors can engage in various seaside activities. The area supports various water-based leisure activities, and rental services for boats may be available to enhance your experience. The presence of parking lots and a well-maintained beach house makes it easy to spend the entire day outdoors. However, please be aware that camping and the use of open flames (such as BBQs) are strictly prohibited within the Ohama Park area.
Ohama Beach is adjacent to the Sumoto Onsen hot spring district. After a refreshing dip in the ocean, visitors can easily transition to a nearby hot spring facility to unwind. The area also features historical landmarks like the Sumoto Castle ruins, making it easy to plan a sightseeing route that combines natural beauty with Japanese history.
To enjoy the beach, please bring swimwear, a change of clothes, towels, and sunscreen. The beach house provides changing rooms, showers, and coin lockers for your convenience. To maintain the environment, please strictly follow local rules: camping, using open flames (including portable heaters/BBQs), playing loud music, or playing golf are prohibited. Additionally, please ensure you take all trash and pet waste home with you. While some signage may be available, English-language support at facilities is limited, so please check local notices carefully.
