Ogi Park is a beautiful destination located in Ogi City, Saga Prefecture, where history and nature exist in perfect harmony. It holds the prestigious distinction of being selected both as one of the "100 Famous Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan" and one of the "100 Historical Parks in Japan." As a symbol of Ogi, the park attracts visitors with its overwhelming landscape of approximately 3,000 cherry trees blooming in spring. Beyond being a simple recreational space, the park possesses the elegance of a historic Japanese garden, offering diverse seasonal beauty throughout the year.
The history of this park is profound, rooted in the exquisite gardens once tended by the first feudal lord of the Ogi Domain, Nabeshima Motoshige, and passed down to the second lord, Naonori. It is a high-class garden that preserves the cultural atmosphere of a former castle town. For many years, it has been carefully preserved as a site that symbolizes the local history and natural beauty. Thus, it is not merely a leisure facility but a precious cultural heritage site where you can feel the deep historical background of Japan.
The greatest highlight is the cherry blossom season in spring. The sight of 3,000 cherry trees in full bloom is truly breathtaking. A particularly precious specimen is the "Tsunomaki," a tree estimated to be 350 years old. The night illumination is also an unmissable experience. As traditional bonbori lanterns and approximately 5,000 bamboo lanterns are lit, a much more mystical and dreamlike landscape unfolds compared to the daytime. During the spring season, food stalls often appear near the nearby Okayama Shrine, adding to the lively and festive atmosphere of hanami (flower viewing).
The best time to visit is from late March to April during the peak cherry blossom season. During this period, the daytime view of the blossoms is spectacular, but the nighttime illumination is especially beloved by couples for its romantic and magical atmosphere. Additionally, in May, the park is beautiful with blooming azaleas and wisteria, making it worth a visit in a different season. For the best experience, we highly recommend visiting during the evening illumination (roughly 18:00 to 21:00) to enjoy the ethereal scenery.
The park is well-equipped with facilities for sports and leisure. The adjacent "Jarakuen Ground" is perfect for sports such as baseball, softball, and soccer. There are also well-maintained tennis courts, allowing you to enjoy healthy outdoor activities. These facilities provide a wonderful way to refresh yourself in an open, natural environment. Since the park is equipped with lighting, you can also utilize these areas during the evening.
The area surrounding the park is filled with historical charm. For example, the nearby Okayama Shrine hosts various stalls during the cherry blossom season, allowing you to touch upon local culture. Furthermore, Ogi City is dotted with other historical streets and nature-rich spots, making Ogi Park an excellent base for exploring the wider Saga region.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing suitable for walking and sports. Since some paths may be unpaved, especially during the busy cherry blossom season, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Regarding park etiquette, please ensure you take all your trash home with you and strictly observe the ban on open flames (fire is strictly prohibited). Using public transportation is encouraged, as parking availability may be limited during peak seasons.
