Tsutaya Inari Shrine, located in Tsuwano, Kashiro District, Shimane Prefecture, is a shrine characterized by its breathtaking view of multiple layers of vermilion torii gates. With roots tracing back to the famous Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto, this site holds significant prestige; historically, it served as a private place of prayer for the lords of the Tsuwano Domain, and access was restricted to them. Today, the shrine is open to the public, inviting visitors to step away from the everyday and enter a mystical space where the vibrant red gates wind through the lush mountain greenery.
The history of this shrine dates back to 1773 (the second year of the An'ei era). It began when Katsutada Kamei, the 7th lord of the Tsuwano Domain, invited the deity from Kyoto's Fushimi Inari Taisha to the peak of Tsutaya to pray for the peace and prosperity of the domain and its people. Since then, the shrine has been deeply revered by successive lords. Until the abolition of the feudal system in the Meiji era, it was strictly forbidden for anyone other than the lords to visit. The historical importance of the site grew even further during the Taisho era when Princess Tomiko of the Kitashirakawawe family visited, leading to the establishment of a treasure house and the Yoro Library. The current main shrine building was completed in 1969 and continues to be a vital center of local faith today.
The greatest attraction is the path of vermilion torii gates that ascends the mountain path. Much like the famous Fushimi Inari in Kyoto, the overlapping layers of gates create a dreamlike landscape of light and shadow. The striking contrast between the vivid vermilion and the surrounding natural greenery makes it an exceptional spot for photography. The tranquil atmosphere of the entire shrine grounds, which allows visitors to feel the weight of its historical and architectural heritage, is another essential highlight.
You can enjoy different expressions of the shrine depending on the season. In the season of fresh greenery, the contrast between the bright vermilion gates and the vibrant green leaves is particularly beautiful, offering a refreshing atmosphere for prayer. Additionally, during certain times of the day when sunlight filters through the gaps in the torii gates, the patterns of light and shadow on the ground enhance the mystical ambiance. Because it is located in a mountainous area, the scenery changes significantly depending on the weather and the time of day, making every visit a unique experience.
Within the shrine grounds, you can receive traditional amulets (omamori) and talismans (ofuda). There are various types of charms for purposes such as family safety, business prosperity, and recovery from illness. Receiving these allows for a deeper connection to Japanese spiritual culture. Walking through the grounds while reflecting on the history of the 'Moto-miya' (original shrine) and its past as a private place of prayer for the lords offers a precious opportunity to experience traditional Japanese forms of faith.
