Ogaki Castle is a historic flatland castle located in Ogaki City, Gifu Prefecture. It is renowned for its pivotal role as the base of the Western Army during the legendary Battle of Sekigahara in the Sengoku period. Today, the site has been developed as a cultural facility centered around its reconstructed four-story, four-level keep. As one of the '100 Famous Castles of Japan,' it serves as an important landmark for understanding Japanese castle culture.
The history of Ogaki Castle dates back to around 1535, when it was reportedly built by Miyagawa Yasusada. During the Warring States period, it was a strategic stronghold contested by various powers, including the Oda and Saito clans. Most notably, it served as the headquarters for Ishida Mitsunari's Western Army during the Battle of Sekigahara, a turning point in Japanese history. During the Edo period, the castle was renovated and developed into a thriving castle town under the rule of the Ishikawa clan (by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu) and later the Toda clan of the Ogaki Domain. Despite facing challenges such as the abolition of the castle system in the Meiji era and destruction by air raids during WWII, the castle has been faithfully restored to its current form.
The interior of the Ogaki Castle keep serves as a museum, with each floor dedicated to a different historical theme. The 1st floor features exhibits regarding the Battle of Sekigahara and the castle's role in the conflict, allowing visitors to learn about the military strategies of the time. The 2nd floor showcases the daily lives of samurai and commoners, including period-appropriate tools and culture. On the 4th floor, an open observation room offers a breathtaking, panoramic view of the Ogaki cityscape. Additionally, the castle utilizes modern technology, such as VR displays, allowing visitors to experience the castle's architecture from multiple angles through digital immersion.
Ogaki Castle offers different charms depending on the season. In spring and autumn, visitors can enjoy strolls through the surrounding park, feeling the changing colors of nature. The daytime is ideal for a detailed study of the exhibits, and the 4th-floor observation deck provides excellent visibility under bright sunlight. Visiting in the late afternoon allows you to appreciate the dignified silhouette of the castle in a more tranquil, serene atmosphere.
The castle provides various ways to feel closer to history. In certain sections, you can encounter physical replicas of weaponry such as matchlock guns (hinawaju), spears, and bows, providing a tactile connection to the equipment used by samurai. Furthermore, the integration of VR content via computers or smartphones allows for a cutting-edge historical experience, enabling you to observe the castle's structure in 360 degrees.
The castle grounds are maintained as 'Ogaki Park,' a popular recreational space for local citizens. You can enjoy walking through the surrounding streets that retain the atmosphere of the former castle town. Some historical remnants of the castle have been relocated to nearby private residences or museums in Kakamigahara City, making the entire region a wonderful area for historical exploration.
As there are many stairs to climb within the keep, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Because the interior houses many precious historical artifacts, please follow all instructions regarding touching exhibits. If you intend to conduct commercial photography, prior application is required. Payments can be made via cash or credit card. A rest area is also available on the 3rd floor for your convenience.
