Oga Aquarium GAO is a scenic aquarium situated along the coastline of the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture. Leveraging its prime location facing the Sea of Japan, the facility showcases fish species native to the nearby waters as well as iconic animals like polar bears. It serves as a vital center for learning about marine ecosystems and is deeply rooted in the local community.
The facility has a long-standing history as the former Akita Prefectural Oga Aquarium. Established in 1967, the original facility gained fame for its successful breeding of the Panama eyed caiman in 1972, a first in Japan. After a period of closure for renovation, the facility reopened in July 2004 under its current name, "Oga Aquarium GAO." Today, it is managed and operated under a designated administrator system by Oga Aquarium Co., Ltd.
The exhibition area is divided into several distinct zones. Visitors can enjoy viewing polar bears, penguins, and a wide variety of creatures native to the waters surrounding Akita Prefecture. The facility features diverse tank configurations designed to showcase the unique characteristics of each species.
Standard operating hours are from 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry at 16:00). Please note that hours may change due to seasonal events or private bookings; for example, some Saturdays may see an early closing at 14:30. We highly recommend checking the official website before your visit. Additionally, certain exhibits, such as the polar bear display, may be temporarily unavailable due to maintenance or biological shifts, so please check for the latest updates.
Through its diverse displays, the aquarium offers deep insights into marine ecosystems. The facility is fully equipped to support a comfortable stay, featuring an on-site museum shop and a restaurant where you can enjoy meals while immersed in the aquatic atmosphere.
The Oga Peninsula area is home to various hot spring resorts, such as Oga Onsen, and several cultural landmarks. Oga Aquarium GAO serves as an excellent starting point for a sightseeing route exploring the natural and cultural beauty of the peninsula.
Payments for admission, the museum shop, and the restaurant can be made via cash or credit cards (lump-sum payments only). Electronic money such as QUICPay, nanaco, WAON, iD, transportation IC cards, and Rakuten Edy are also accepted. Please note that you cannot top up electronic money balances at the facility.
Guide maps are available in English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Korean to assist international visitors.
Personal photography for private use (social media, blogs, or smartphone photos) is generally permitted. However, flash photography is strictly prohibited in areas where signs are posted. The use of tripods, monopods, or any photography-assisting equipment, as well as live streaming, is not allowed. To ensure the safety of the animals and a pleasant environment for all, please refrain from tapping on the glass or making loud noises.
Reservations are generally not required for standard admission. However, since operating hours may change due to private events, please check the official website in advance.
