Odori Park is a vast urban park stretching 1.5km east to west through the heart of Sapporo, covering an area of approximately 7.8 hectares. As a symbol of the city, it provides a rich landscape of greenery and seasonal colors. The park is divided into five distinct zones—Interaction, Oasis, Gathering, Frontier, and Flower—each offering a unique atmosphere. With beautiful flowerbeds, manicured lawns, and approximately 4,700 trees of 92 different species, it offers a peaceful retreat for all visitors.
The park has a long history intertwined with the development of Sapporo. Its modern layout was refined through the design of Yasuo Nagaoka, a pioneer of modern Japanese park planning. Throughout the park, you can find statues and monuments that reflect the history of the region's development. The large-scale seasonal events held here have become iconic cultural symbols, attracting visitors from both Japan and around the world.
The park offers various areas to suit different moods and purposes. Near West 1-chome, the view of the TV Tower harmonizes perfectly with the urban skyline. In the Sunt Garden zone near West 12-chome, you can enjoy beautiful scenery featuring roses and fountains. The park is also dotted with historical statues and unique monuments. The scenery changes completely depending on when you visit: from the fragrant lilac scents of early summer to the dazzling White Illumination displays in winter.
Each season offers a unique charm. From spring to summer, the atmosphere is vibrant with the Lilac Festival, YOSAKOI Soran Festival, and summer beer gardens. In autumn, the colorful foliage is breathtaking, while winter brings the world-famous Sapporo Snow Festival and the enchanting White Illumination. You can experience bright, natural landscapes during the day and a magical, illuminated atmosphere at night.
Visitors can participate in a wide variety of seasonal activities. During the summer beer gardens, you can enjoy Sapporo's rich food culture and seasonal flavors, while winter events offer spectacular displays of snow and light. The park also features official shops and information centers where you can find original Odori Park merchandise. Beyond just walking, these special seasonal events allow you to truly connect with the culture of Sapporo.
Located in the center of Sapporo, Odori Park is surrounded by numerous tourist attractions and commercial facilities. It offers excellent access to underground walkways, nearby hotels, and restaurants, making it an ideal spot for a break during sightseeing or a relaxing evening stroll. It is also very close to the commercial areas around Sapporo Station and various historical landmarks.
Preparation depends on the season. For summer, we recommend hats and plenty of water to stay hydrated and protected from the sun. For winter, heavy thermal clothing and non-slip shoes are essential for walking on snowy paths. For payments at nearby stalls or shops, cash, credit cards, and transit IC cards are generally accepted. English signage and some English-speaking services are available.
