Odagayahara is a vast grassland area spanning approximately 3 kilometers, located within the Nikko National Park in Tochigi Prefecture. Situated on the west side of the Yugawa River flowing from Lake Yunoko, its area is about one-fourth the size of the nearby Senjogahara. Surrounded by dense Mizunara oak forests, the landscape undergoes dramatic transformations with each season. A particularly iconic sight is the single white birch tree standing in the center of the grassland, a beloved symbol that attracts many photographers and nature lovers.
As part of the Nikko National Park, Odagayahara is strictly managed to preserve its delicate ecosystem. In the past, vehicle access was more common, but to protect the environment, private vehicle access is now restricted. Today, the area represents a model of sustainable tourism, where access is primarily managed through low-emission buses and well-maintained walking paths to minimize the human footprint on this precious natural habitat.
The greatest allure of this area is the seasonal explosion of plant life. From early summer to mid-summer, you can witness vibrant communities of wildflowers such as Umanoashigata (June–July), Hozakisimotoke (July–August), and Nikko Chamomile (July–August). In autumn, the landscape turns into a rich tapestry of golden hues from the changing Mizunara oak leaves and autumn grasses. Walking along the maintained circular path allows you to observe the unique high-altitude wetland vegetation up close.
To truly experience the magic, we recommend visiting during peak blooming periods. A visit between June and August is ideal to see the lush, powerful vitality of the summer wildflowers. Alternatively, autumn offers a serene beauty with the golden colors of the forest. Please note that the eco-friendly bus service typically operates from late April to November, so please plan your trip according to the seasonal transport schedules.
The primary activity here is a peaceful stroll through nature. Using the paths maintained by the Ministry of the Environment, visitors can observe the high-altitude wetland ecosystem. There are also observation points where you can gaze out over the vast grasslands and surrounding mountain ranges. It is a perfect place to disconnect from daily life and reconnect with the sounds of nature and the wind. Please remember that to protect the environment, staying on the designated paths is mandatory.
Odagayahara is located in the Oku-Nikko area, which is rich with natural wonders. Nearby attractions include the Senjogahara Plateau, Lake Yunoko, and the famous Ryuzu Falls. The area is also dotted with hot spring (onsen) facilities, allowing you to relax in warm waters after your nature walk. Most visitors arrive via nearby hubs such as Akanuma, Nishinoko, or Senjugahama.
As you will be walking in a natural environment, please wear comfortable clothing and prepare for sudden weather changes. Even though paths are maintained, sturdy walking shoes are essential for the natural terrain. Since cash may be required for bus fares, it is wise to carry Japanese Yen. As this is a protected National Park, please strictly follow the rules: do not pick plants, do not leave any trash behind, and stay on the designated paths. Note that English-language signage may be limited, so we recommend checking your route in advance.
