Obako is a stunning scenic area located in the Sounkyo district of Kamikawa, Hokkaido. Situated about 6 km from Sounkyo Onsen towards Kitami, this location reveals a unique landscape immediately after passing through the Shin-Obako Tunnel. The name "Obako" refers to a topography where the riverbanks are so steep and high that they resemble a "box" (kako). The sight of the massive, vertical rock walls standing like a giant folding screen is truly awe-inspiring, showcasing the raw power of nature.
The landscape was shaped by the lava from the eruption of Mt. Daisetsu (Obachidaira) approximately 30,000 years ago. As the hot lava cooled slowly over many years, the Ishikari River bedrock developed a distinct pattern of vertical cracks known as "columnar jointing." This geological phenomenon is a historical testament to the massive energy of volcanic activity that once shaped the very foundation of this land.
The primary attraction is the spectacular cliff face featuring perfectly aligned columnar jointing. The texture of the rocks—ranging in shades of white, gray, and earthy brown—creates a mesmerizing vertical pattern. The contrast between the rugged rock walls and the lush surrounding forests and flowing river highlights the exquisite beauty of natural sculpting. It is a popular spot for photography and a perfect place to feel the dynamic scale of Sounkyo's wilderness.
Obako can be enjoyed year-round, offering a different face to every season. From spring to summer, the vibrant greenery and the flow of the river create a sharp contrast against the stone walls. In autumn, the changing colors of the foliage provide a beautiful palette against the gray rocks. In winter, the Sounkyo area is famous for its heavy snow and the Ice Waterfall Festival, making the snow-covered cliffs a spectacular sight. For the best view of the intricate patterns of the columnar jointing, visiting during bright daylight hours is highly recommended.
Visitors can enjoy the scenery through scenic drives or short walks. Because it is located right after the Shin-Obako Tunnel, it is an easy and convenient stop on a sightseeing route. Photography is a popular activity here, allowing travelers to capture the majestic natural architecture. Please note that the "Kogako Walking Path" is strictly closed due to the danger of rockfalls; please stay within safe, designated areas.
Near Obako, you can find famous landmarks such as Sounkyo Onsen, Ginga Falls (Galaxy Falls), and Ryusei Falls (Meteor Falls). The area is part of the Daisetsuzan National Park, ensuring a preserved and pristine natural environment. The nearby Sounkyo Onsen town makes it easy to enjoy a relaxing hot spring soak or a delicious meal after your visit.
