Nyuto Onsenkyo is a renowned hot spring area located at the foot of Mt. Nyuto in Akita Prefecture. It consists of seven distinct hot spring inns: Tsurunoyu, Myonoyu, Kaniba, Ogama, Magoroku, Kuroyu, and Kyukamura. With a history stretching back to the Edo period, this area was traditionally used as a 'Toji' site, where people gathered for the medicinal benefits of the water. Surrounded by a dense, beautiful beech forest, each facility offers a unique type of thermal water and a distinct atmosphere.
This region is deeply connected to the history of the Akita clan since the Edo period. It has long functioned as a destination for 'Toji' (traditional hot spring healing). The historical architecture and the long-standing culture of hot spring bathing are preserved in many of the facilities. For instance, at Tsurunol, you can see the traditional thatched-roof buildings that evoke the atmosphere of a bygone era, allowing visitors to feel the weight of Japanese history.
The seven inns of Nyuto Onsenkyo each offer something special. Whether it is Tsurunoyu, Myonoyu, Kaniba, Ogama, Magoroku, Kuroyu, or Kyukamura, you can enjoy different water qualities and stunning scenery at each location. The outdoor baths (rotenburo) are particularly famous for being integrated into the natural landscape. To fully immerse yourself in this culture, you can use the 'Yumeguri-cho' (Hot Spring Tour Pass), which is available to certain guests, allowing you to visit multiple facilities.
Nyuto Onsenkyo offers a different face in every season. In winter, the area is covered in deep snow, creating a breathtaking scene of white beech forests and steaming hot springs—a perfect time for a snowy outdoor bath. In spring, summer, and autumn, the vibrant greenery and changing colors of the forest provide a beautiful backdrop for relaxation. Please note that day-trip bathing hours and operating styles vary by facility, so it is highly recommended to check with each inn in advance.
The highlight of Nyuto Onsenkyo is the 'Yumeguri' (hot spring hopping). By using the 'Yumeguri-cho' pass, guests can visit the seven member facilities. This allows you to experience a wide variety of mineral compositions and natural settings. Photography is also a popular activity here, as the scenery of the steam rising against the mountain backdrop is truly iconic.
