Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium, located at Numazu Port in Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a specialized facility dedicated to the fascinating world of deep-sea creatures. It is world-renowned for its exhibits of the Coelacanth, the legendary 'living fossil.' The facility was established to research and showcase the deep-sea resources and biological diversity of Suruga Bay. While it was originally known strongly as a 'Coelacanth Museum' due to its focus on this specific species, it has evolved into a comprehensive aquarium that introduces the broader charms of the deep sea to a wide audience. It serves as a vital cultural pillar of Numazu Port's tourism, alongside the nearby 'Port 83' area, supporting the local maritime heritage and food culture.
The centerpiece of the aquarium is the Coelacanth exhibit, where visitors can observe two frozen specimens and three taxidermy models up close, revealing their unique and ancient forms. The collection includes over 100 species, ranging from creatures harvested from the depths of Suruga Bay to deep-sea life from various parts of the world. Additionally, during the late afternoon, the lighting in the exhibition areas is adjusted to create a more realistic and mystical deep-sea atmosphere, perfect for photography.
Beyond traditional viewing, the aquarium offers interactive content. The 'VR Deep Sea Adventure: Deep Cruise' allows you to experience a journey in a submersible through a reconstructed Suruga Bay, searching for underwater ruins. There is also a ride-based shooting attraction called 'Deep Sea World,' where you can use a laser gun to explore the deep-sea environment. Please note that these attractions may require an additional fee, though discounts are often available with the presentation of your aquarium ticket.
Directly adjacent to the aquarium is the 'Port 83 (PORT 83)' complex, a multi-purpose tourism facility. Here, you can enjoy a variety of dining options including Italian restaurants, bakeries, cafes, and seafood specialists. After your visit to the aquarium, it is highly recommended to enjoy the fresh seafood and local specialties of Numazu Port, making it a perfect base for a full day of sightseeing.
Since many exhibition areas are kept dark to mimic the deep sea, comfortable clothing is recommended. Payments can be made via credit cards or transportation IC cards (in addition to cash). Some attractions may require separate fees. Photography is permitted, but please refrain from touching the exhibits or the living creatures.
