Nuinoike is a breathtaking spring located in the Kawatsu district of Shiroishi Town, Saga Prefecture. The pond has a dramatic history: it was completely dried up for over 40 years due to excessive groundwater extraction, but miraculously saw the return of its spring in 2001. Today, it is home to the incredibly pure 'Kinmyosui' (Golden Exquisite Water), which has been officially recognized as one of the 'Saga Heritagees to be Preserved for the 22nd Century.' The pond covers approximately 0.6 hectares and is surrounded by a rich, untouched natural environment.
The history of Nuinoike is said to span over 800 years. Originally, this area was blessed with numerous springs used for agriculture and daily life. However, due to the drilling of deep wells for drought prevention in the late 1950s, the pond completely dried up in 1958. The turning point came in 2001 when a change in water management allowed water to surge once again around the Itsukushima Shrine. The shrine, which enshrines the deity Ichikishimajima-hime-no-mikoto, has long been a center of local spiritual devotion. Local legends also connect the site to the name 'Nuono-no-suke Yujitsuna,' a relative of the local lord during the era of the Suko Castle.
The most striking feature is the revived 'Kinmyosui.' Visitors can see the incredibly clear water flowing through collection points set up by local residents. The Itsukushima Shrine, positioned at the center of the pond, creates a sacred and mystical atmosphere against the backdrop of the surrounding landscape. The scenery is further enhanced by tall cedar trees and seasonal foliage that reflect beautifully on the water's surface, offering a unique blend of natural vitality and spiritual history.
Nuinoike offers a different face in every season. The reflections on the water are particularly stunning when the surrounding trees turn vibrant colors in autumn or when the greenery is at its deepest in summer. During the summer, the area sometimes hosts the 'Summer Festival Candle Night,' where countless lights float on the water, creating a magical, dreamlike atmosphere. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours to appreciate the clarity of the spring, or at dusk to see the silhouettes of the trees against the changing light.
The area is a hub for community-led nature conservation and cultural activities. You can learn about the coexistence of humans and nature through local environmental surveys. Additionally, seasonal cultural events such as fishing competitions or traditional 'Koto and Dance' gatherings offer a rare chance to experience the deep-rooted culture of the region. Nestled within the beautiful pastoral landscapes of the Shiroishi plains, the area is perfect for scenic drives and walking tours. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes for exploring the perimeter of the pond. If you wish to collect some of the spring water, please bring a clean container. As this is a cherished local site, please follow strict etiquette: take all trash home with you and respect the natural environment.
