Lake Nozori is a picturesque dam lake located in Nakanojo Town, Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture, and is a precious part of the Joshin'etsu-Kogen National Park. Surrounded by dense primeval forests, the lake possesses a serene beauty that makes it look like a natural lake. The lake was formed by the Nozori Dam, and its crest sits at an altitude of 1,517 meters, which once held the historical distinction of being the highest dam crest in Japan. The lakeside area is well-maintained, offering beautiful hiking trails and areas where rare alpine plants grow naturally.
The lake was created by the Nozori Dam, a rock-fill dam constructed across the Nakatsu River in the Shinano River system. Currently, the dam serves as a power generation facility for Tokyo Electric Power Renewable Power. The crest of the dam is paved with asphalt, allowing visitors to walk across to the opposite side. It is important to note that a section of National Route 405 near the dam is no longer passable for vehicles, a measure taken to preserve the pristine natural environment of the area.
The defining features of Lake Nozori are its untouched natural scenery and the vibrant lakeside environment. The lake is a popular spot for fishing, with trout and char frequently stocked; visitors can enjoy fishing by purchasing a fishing permit. The seasonal changes in vegetation are also a major draw. During the summer, the area is adorned with alpine flowers such as the Nozori-kisuge (a local variety of Nikko-kisuge) and Renge-tsutsuji. The dam crest itself serves as a roadway, providing an excellent vantage point to overlook the expansive views.
When planning your visit, please pay close attention to the bus schedule. The local bus service operates only from May 1st to October 20th each year. This period coincides with the blooming of alpine flowers and the relatively cooler summer season. Even in summer, the water temperature remains quite low, making the lake unsuitable for swimming. If you plan on hiking or climbing, it is essential to check the temperature and weather conditions, as mountain climates can change rapidly.
Visitors can enjoy various outdoor activities such as hiking and fishing along the lakeside. For fishing enthusiasts, the target species are typically trout and char, and a fishing permit must be purchased beforehand. Additionally, the area serves as a gateway to various mountain trails, including the paths leading to Mount Shirasuna. Most activities center around immersive experiences within the natural environment.
As part of the Joshin'etsu-Kogen National Park, the area around Lake Nozori is characterized by national forests such as the Nozori Natural Recreation Forest. Nearby, you can also explore the famous Kusatsu Onsen hot spring resort and other cultural sites in Nakanojo Town. Please be aware that parts of National Route 405 near the dam transition into steep mountain paths, so exercise caution if traveling by vehicle.
Cash is generally required for purchasing fishing permits or paying for bus fares.
English language support and signage at local facilities and around the lake are limited.

Since the lake is located at a high altitude (approx. 1,517m), weather can be unpredictable. Even in summer, temperatures can drop significantly. Please bring layers and appropriate clothing for temperature regulation.

While the dam crest is paved, most of the surrounding hiking trails and mountain paths are unpaved and may feature uneven surfaces, steps, or steep inclines. Sturdy walking shoes are highly recommended.
Swimming in the lake is strictly prohibited. To preserve the beautiful environment, please ensure you take all your trash home with you.
