Cape Nosappu is a beautiful scenic cape overlooking Soya Bay, located in the Nosappu district of Wakkanai, Hokkaido. The name is said to derive from the Ainu word "Nossa-m," meaning "near the jaw." Due to its unique geographical position near the northern tip of Japan, on days when the sea fog clears, visitors can witness the majestic silhouettes of remote islands such as Rishiri Island and Rebun Island in the distance. The Wakkanai Lighthouse serves as the iconic landmark of the area, and the surrounding vicinity features facilities where you can learn about marine life and the local natural environment.
The name of the area is believed to originate from the Ainu word "not-sam," which translates to "near the jaw." This region has a deep historical connection with marine life, including whales and seals. In the nearby Eyamposhi Fishing Port Park, there is a monument of a dolphin, based on local legends of dolphins passing through the Soya Strait. It is an area where history and nature have coexisted for centuries.
The primary attraction of Cape Nosappu is the Wakkanai Lighthouse and the breathtaking panoramic view of Soya Bay. Visitors can also find the "Cape Nosappu Monument," which reflects the local history. The waters surrounding the cape are incredibly rich in biodiversity, where sightings of marine mammals such as whales, dolphins, killer whales, and seals are possible. Additionally, the nearby Nosappu Peak (elevation 210.3m) features a road leading to the summit, providing an elevated perspective of the landscape.
Cape Nosappu offers beautiful scenery throughout the year. It is especially recommended to visit during periods when the air is clear and sea fog is minimal to enjoy a sharp view of "Rishiri Fuji" (Mount Rishiri). During the summer months (June to August), the weather is ideal for a refreshing stroll with a cool sea breeze. In the late afternoon, the contrast between the setting sun and the lighthouse creates a stunningly beautiful landscape.
The area is perfect for nature observation and walking. Adjacent to the cape are facilities like the Wakkanai City Nosappu Cold Water Aquarium and the Wakkanai City Youth Science Museum, where visitors can gain scientific knowledge about marine life. You can also enjoy walking along the Nosappu Course (Wakkanai Footpath) to experience a quiet moment while observing birds and marine life against the backdrop of the beautiful coastline.
Convenient facilities are clustered near the cape, including the Wakkanai City Nosappu Cold Water Aquarium, the Youth Science Museum, and various souvenir shops. The Eyamposhi Fishing Port Park is also nearby, offering a glimpse into local legends through its dolphin monument. Most visitors access the area via bus from Wakkanai Station.
Because the cape is subject to strong winds, we highly recommend wearing windproof and thermal clothing. Even in summer, a light jacket is essential due to the sea breeze. For footwear, please choose comfortable walking shoes as some paths may be uneven or unpaved.
