Cape Nosappu, located in Nemuro City, Hokkaido, is the easternmost cape of mainland Japan (Latitude 43°23'07"N, Longitude 145°49'01"E). It is widely celebrated as the place where the sun rises earliest in Japan. At the tip of the cape stands the Nosappu Cape Lighthouse, surrounded by a scenic landscape. From this vantage point, you can see the Habomai Islands (including Kasuri Island and Suisho Island) and Kunashiri Island floating on the horizon, offering a profound and special view of the Northern Territories.
The name is said to derive from the Ainu word 'Nopp-sam,' meaning 'beside the cape.' The area is dotted with facilities that convey its historical significance, such as the 'Bridge of the Four Islands'—a symbol erected to pray for the return of the Northern Territories—as well as the lighthouse, Northern Hall, and the House of Nostalgia. These sites serve to educate visitors about the region's history and current status. Additionally, the presence of the 'Light of Prayer' tower, which carries a flame brought from Okinawa, symbolizes a deep wish for peace.
The greatest attraction is the magnificent sunrise rising over the horizon. Every New Year's Day, many people gather here for the 'Cape Nosappu Hatsumode' to welcome the first sun of the year. The lighthouse at the tip of the cape and the observation facilities overlooking the Northern Territories are also essential stops. Many facilities provide free binoculars, allowing visitors to observe the lighthouses on Kasuri Island or monitoring stations on Suisho Island. In certain seasons, you may even witness the arrival of drift ice, showcasing both the harshness and the beauty of nature.
The summer months (May to September) are relatively pleasant, though temperatures remain cool. For instance, the average temperature in August is quite low at 16.5°C, so expect a cool breeze. The most recommended time to visit is during sunrise to experience the earliest light on the mainland. Depending on the season, you might also experience the sight of drift ice, offering a completely different atmosphere than the summer months.
Activities center around nature observation. The area is home to diverse wildlife, including land animals like the Ezo red fox and Ezo deer, as well as marine life such as sea otters, spotted seals, and ringed seals. You may also spot various birds like the Steller's sea eagle or Blakiston's fish owl. Occasionally, sightseeing boats may operate to facilitate these observations. Additionally, local facilities offer exhibits regarding the Northern Territories and local regional products.
Around the cape, you will find the 'House of Nostalgia' and 'Northern Hall,' which introduce the culture and history of the Northern Territories, along with souvenir shops and local eateries. The area is easily accessible by car from Nemuro city center, making it a convenient destination for road trips.
Due to its location at the edge of Hokkaido, Cape Nosappu is known for strong winds and low temperatures, even in summer. If you plan to watch the sunrise or visit in winter, windproof and thermal clothing is essential. Please prepare a thick jacket. Regarding payments, please carry cash as some local facilities and buses may not accept cards. Since English signage is limited, it is recommended to check information in advance.
