Norikura Kogen is a vast highland area located on the eastern side of the southern Hida Mountains (Northern Alps), with elevations ranging from 1,100m to 1,800m. Formed by lava flows from Mount Norikura, this area attracts visitors year-round: as a refreshing summer retreat, a base for autumn hiking, and a premier destination for winter skiing. The area is characterized by its abundant natural springs, therapeutic hot springs, and a rich ecosystem of diverse flora and fauna.
Historically, life in this region has been deeply intertwined with nature. In the high-altitude areas, traditional agriculture such as buckwheat cultivation has preserved a unique local food culture. Interestingly, due to its extreme environment, the area has also been used for training purposes for Antarctic research expeditions. Today, the region focuses on sustainable tourism, developing its industry while strictly preserving the natural environment.
The scenery in Norikura Kogen is incredibly diverse. From late spring to early summer, the most iconic sight is the 'Snow Wall' (Yuki-no-Kabe), where snowbanks reach heights of approximately 9 meters—taller than a bus. Other must-see spots include the Sanbon-taki Falls (one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls), the serene Ushiro-ike Pond, and the lush Ichinose Grassland. As you hike through the mountain trails, you will encounter forests of white birch and larch, and if you are lucky, you might spot the Japanese Serow, a specially protected natural monument.
The charm of Norikura Kogen lies in its changing seasonal-faces. From late May to June, you can experience the spectacular 'Snow Wall' via specialized bus tours. In July and August, it is a perfect destination for those seeking a cool escape from the heat through hiking or cycling. Autumn is the best time for strolling around Suzuran Bridge to enjoy the vibrant fall foliage. In winter, the area transforms into a vast playground for snow sports and skiing.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Norikura Kogen is a paradise. You can enjoy everything from serious mountaineering and hiking to leisurely cycling and downhill skiing. The local hot spring culture is also a highlight; the Norikura Onsen villages (including Norikura Kogen, Suzuran, and Azumi Nobo Onsen) allow you to soak in therapeutic waters surrounded by untouched nature. The area also promotes a new style of wellness-focused stay called 'Hoji,' which focuses on harmonizing the mind and body through nature.
Located at the eastern foot of Mount Norikura, the highland is part of the beautiful Chubu Sangaku National Park. It is easily accessible from Matsumoto city via car or bus, and it is located near other famous hot spring areas like Shakotsu Onsen. Many accommodation facilities, such as 'Kyukamura Norikura Kogen,' are situated at high altitudes, serving as perfect bases for hikers and tourists.
When visiting Norikura Kogen, especially at higher altitudes, temperature fluctuations are extreme. Temperatures near the 2,600m bus stops can be 10°C lower than in Matsumoto city; always bring heavy thermal clothing. For hikers, crampons or snow spikes are essential depending on the snow conditions. If using the 'Shunzan' (Spring Mountain) bus, you must complete and submit a 'Mountain Entry Plan' in advance. Please respect local rules regarding waste disposal and nature conservation to keep this environment pristine.
