Nokonoshima is a beautiful island that offers a perfect blend of easy accessibility and rich natural beauty. Located just a 10-minute ferry ride from Fukuoka City, it is a destination where you can truly connect with nature. The island is famous for its seasonal transformations: vibrant yellow rapeseed flowers in spring, bright sunflowers in summer, and a breathtaking expanse of approximately 800,000 cosmos flowers in autumn. Surrounded by the calm sea, it provides a relaxing environment to unwind and enjoy the scenery.
The history of Nokonoshima is deeply rooted in the past, with records dating back to around 731 AD. Archaeological finds, such as polished stone tools from the Mikoshiba stone tool group and obsidian tools, indicate that humans have inhabited the island since ancient times. During the Nara period, the northern tip of the island, Cape Yara, served as a strategic location for the 'Sakimori' (frontier guards). Furthermore, historical records from the Heian period mention the existence of horse pastures, suggesting the island has been a significant point of interest for centuries.
The primary highlight of the island is the 'Nokonoshima Island Park,' where visitors can enjoy different floral landscapes depending on the season. In addition to the flower fields, the southeastern part of the island contains historical remains, including ancient stone sarcophagi. You can also find areas with lush palm trees along the coast, giving the island a tropical, resort-like atmosphere that is perfect for photography.
The best time to visit depends on the flowers you wish to see. For spring lovers, visit in April for the rapeseed blossoms. For summer, July and August offer beautiful sunflowers. The most spectacular season is autumn (September to October), when the massive cosmos flower fields create an unforgettable landscape. While most visitors enjoy daytime strolls and cafe visits, those staying at the campsite can enjoy the peaceful sounds of the waves and a clear starry night sky.
There are numerous ways to enjoy the island's natural environment. You can wander through the Island Park, relax at a seaside cafe, or enjoy an outdoor adventure at the campsite with BBQ and overnight stays. The island offers various accommodations, including bungalows and tent sites, allowing you to spend a night immersed in nature. At the cafe 'Noko's Ocean,' you can enjoy a slow-paced time while gazing at the beautiful ocean views.
Nokonoshima is easily accessible from various points in Fukuoka. The journey begins at the Meinohama Ferry Terminal, which serves as the gateway to the island. The surrounding Fukuoka area offers many commercial facilities and urban attractions, making it easy to combine a city trip with a relaxing island getaway.
Since the island is a natural park, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for outdoor activities.
