Noge Yama Zoo is a municipal zoo located within Noge Yama Park in Nishi Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. The zoo is home to over 1,000 animals across more than 100 species, including reticulated giraffes, chimpanzees, red pandas, and Humboldt penguins. Despite being located in a central urban area, it provides an excellent environment for observing a wide variety of wildlife. A highlight is the specialized reptile exhibition hall, which maintains a controlled temperature to support the care and protection of crocodiles and various land tortoises. Since admission is free, it is an accessible destination for families and travelers of all budgets.
The zoo opened in 1951 as the "Noge Yama Amusement Park." In 1964, the amusement park functions were closed, and it transitioned into the current Noge-Yama Zoo. One of the most unique cultural aspects of the zoo is the presence of the "Noge Suspension Bridge," a pedestrian bridge designed by the renowned industrial designer Sori Yanagi. Elements of his design philosophy can also be seen in the signage and various park structures, offering a touch of mid-century modern design culture. Having served the local community and tourists for decades, the zoo celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2021.
The zoo features diverse exhibition areas for various animals. In addition to the giraffes, red pandas, and penguins, there is a specialized facility for reptiles. The "Polar Bear House," which once housed polar bears, has been repurposed; it now features a life-sized model of a bear and allows visitors to observe the interior of the enclosure, serving as a historical record of previous animal habitats. This provides a unique educational perspective on how animal care has evolved.
You can enjoy observing animal activities throughout the seasons. The months of March to May and October to November are particularly pleasant, as the weather is mild and animals tend to be more active. The zoo is open from 09:30 to 16:30, with the last entry at 16:00. Visiting during the bright daylight hours is recommended for the best visibility of animal movements. Please note that the zoo is closed on Mondays (if Monday is a public holiday, it closes on Tuesday), so plan your visit accordingly.
Noge Yama Zoo is situated within Noge Yama Park, allowing visitors to enjoy a stroll through the park after seeing the animals. For those looking to expand their wildlife experience, the "Miki ga Hara Chibikko Zoo" is located in Asahi Ward. Additionally, Yokohama is home to larger facilities like "Zoorasia," making it easy to create a comprehensive wildlife and nature sightseeing route within the Yokohama area.
Because the zoo features slopes and various pathways, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. While admission to the zoo is free, please be prepared for potential costs at internal facilities or parking. While some English signage is available, please observe basic etiquette to protect the animals' habitat. Respecting the boundaries of the enclosures ensures a safe and pleasant experience for both visitors and the animals.
