Nishiyama Onsen is a historic hot spring area located in Hayakawa Town, Minamikoma District, Yamanashi Prefecture, boasting a storied history of approximately 1,300 years. Its most distinctive feature is the ability to enjoy 100% natural, free-flowing hot spring water (kakenagashi) while immersed in a rich natural environment. Facilities such as "Yushima no Yu" offer open-air baths with a sense of profound openness, allowing guests to gaze at the surrounding mountains and the beautiful valley, providing the perfect environment to forget the hustle and bustle of daily life and relax both mind and body.
Legend has it that this hot spring was discovered about 1,300 years ago by Shiro Nagamaro and Shiro Hisamaro, said to be the sons of Fujiwara no Makoto. Known since ancient times as a renowned mountain hot spring, it has long been loved by many for therapeutic bathing (toji). The architecture that evokes a deep sense of history and the facilities that harmonize with nature serve as precious sites that preserve and pass down traditional Japanese hot spring culture to the present day.
The greatest charms of Nishiyama Onsen are its scenery and water quality. For example, at "Yushima no Yu," you can enjoy an open-air bath in a space where wood, stone, and modern pergola designs harmonize beautifully. Furthermore, at the "Keiunkon" lodging, guests can experience the beauty of the Hayakawa Valley through six different types of baths, engaging all five senses. The combination of the changing seasonal scenery and the warm, free-flowing hot spring water provides visitors with a sense of deep tranquility.
Nishiyama Onsen is a place where you can enjoy the changing colors of nature throughout the four seasons. In summer, you can enjoy river activities and hiking, while in autumn, you can witness the vibrant colors of the foliage. The autumn season is particularly popular, as the trees along the valley turn brilliant colors, offering a spectacular view while soaking in the hot spring. Additionally, in July and August, some facilities extend their day-trip bathing hours until 19:00, allowing you to enjoy the cool evening air.
Beyond just soaking in the hot springs, there are plenty of activities to enjoy the surrounding nature. The driving course along the Hayakawa Valley is a route where you can directly feel the seasonal transitions. There is also an abundance of nature observation opportunities, such as the "Bird Park" for birdwatching and the "Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line," which features unique geological characteristics. Some local inns even offer shuttle services for hikers, making it possible to combine outdoor adventures with hot spring relaxation.
Near Nishiyama Onsen lies the even more secluded "Narita Onsen," known as a hidden gem. Located deep within the Hayakawa Valley, it has a history so profound that legends say King Nara spent eight years here for therapeutic bathing. Additionally, the driving route heading north along National Route 52 offers a landscape rich in nature, featuring precious geological faults and beautiful valleys, making the entire area a treasure trove of natural experiences.
When enjoying the hot springs, please observe etiquette regarding changing rooms and bathing areas to show respect to others. For clothing, please prepare appropriate attire for the season (light clothing for summer, and warm layers for autumn/winter). Please note that some facilities may not accept parcel deliveries for non-guests, so it is best to check in advance. Additionally, as many facilities primarily accept cash, we recommend preparing small change or 1,000 yen notes for smooth transactions.
