Nishikawa Niikura Rindo is a beloved forest road route located in Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi Prefecture, popular among cyclists and nature lovers. The course spans 9.8 km with an elevation gain of 569m and an average gradient of 5.8%, making it a highly sought-after destination for road bike enthusiasts looking for a challenging hill climb. The journey begins in a quiet residential area and gradually ascends, providing a unique experience as the scenery shifts from everyday landscapes to rich, natural forest scenery. While there are no formal observation decks, the cleared areas along the path offer breathtaking vistas of Lake Kawaguchi and Mt. Fuji.
This area is surrounded by the abundant natural beauty at the foot of Mt. Fuji. Nishikawa Niikura Rindo is maintained as a route that utilizes the local topography and is recognized as part of the 'Olympic Legacy Road Area.' It plays a vital role in promoting the charm of the Mt. Fuji foothills through activities like cycling while preserving the natural landscape. The route's structure, connecting residential zones to the forest, beautifully illustrates the close-knit relationship between local life and nature.
The greatest highlight of this route is the 'change in scenery' during your ride. The transition after climbing the steep approximately 1km section from the residential area is particularly striking. Near the 8.5km mark, you will find a final vantage point that offers a sense of great achievement. Scattered throughout the course are spots where the vast expanse of Lake Kawaguchi and the majestic silhouette of Mt. Fuji can be clearly seen. The descent following the climb also provides a refreshing sense of liberation.
While the route can be enjoyed year-round, the best times to visit are March, April, May, September, October, and November. Spring offers fresh greenery, while autumn provides stunning seasonal colors. We recommend riding during daylight hours to easily monitor road conditions and fully appreciate the changing views. Please be mindful of weather and temperature fluctuations.
The primary activity is cycling, specifically road bike hill climbing. The first part of the course features a steep 1km section, followed by more gradual slopes. This contrast between the intense climb and the easier sections is the true joy for cyclists. Please note that some sections are narrow, so exercise caution when passing oncoming vehicles or other cyclists. It is a perfect way to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.
As part of the 'Olympic Legacy Road Area,' the route is surrounded by other famous paths such as Doshi-michi, Mikuni Pass, and Nishihama Pass. Additionally, Fujikawaguchiko offers many tourist facilities and restaurants, making it easy to enjoy sightseeing before or after your ride. The location is perfectly positioned for a comprehensive Mt. Fuji cycling tour.
Helmets are mandatory for all cyclists. Due to the elevation changes, please bring clothing suitable for temperature shifts, as well as water and snacks. Since some sections are narrow, please ride safely. For payments at nearby facilities, we recommend carrying both cash and a credit card. As this is a natural forest road, please follow local etiquette by taking your trash with you and respecting the environment. Please note that there is no English signage or staff support provided on the route itself.
