The NYK Line History Museum, located in Naka-ku, Yokohama, is a corporate museum operated by the NYK Group. It serves as a gateway to understanding the history of maritime transport that developed alongside the modernization of Japan. The permanent exhibitions offer a multi-dimensional look at the journey of NYK from the Meiji era to the present day, utilizing a rich collection of photographs, scale models, and video footage to bring the history of global shipping routes to life.
Originally opened in 1993 as the 'NYK Line Historical Archives' within a warehouse in Yokohama, the facility was later renovated and reopened in 2003 as the 'NYK Line History Museum' within the Yokohama NYK Building. The renovation was highly acclaimed, winning the 15th BELCA Award for Best Renovation, as it successfully restored the architectural essence of the original design. Currently, the museum has been closed since April 1, 2023, due to local redevelopment plans. It is scheduled to reopen around Spring 2027 under the new name 'NYK Museum,' located within the adjacent 'Yokohama Building.'
The exhibitions are structured chronologically through the various phases of Japanese maritime history:
Before its closure, the facility featured an orientation corner with approximately 1,500 books related to maritime history and a museum shop selling original merchandise. Upon reopening, the museum plans to continue its mission of educating visitors on maritime history through a refreshed exhibition concept.
The museum was located in the Kaigan-dori area of Naka-ku, Yokohama—a historic district adjacent to the Port of Yokohama. The area is dotted with significant landmarks, such as the Hikawa Maru (a designated Important Cultural Property) and various historical buildings that define the cityscape of Yokohama. A new development is currently underway, with the museum's relocation to a new building planned for 2027.
