Edo Wonderland Nikko is a specialized theme park located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, dedicated to the Edo and Sengoku periods. Spanning a vast area of approximately 495,000 square meters, the park features a meticulously reconstructed Edo-period cityscape. The park is divided into eight distinct areas: Kaido (Highways), Merchant Town, Artisan Town, Post Town, Theater District, Samurai Town, Ninja Village, and the Filming Village. Each area offers a unique atmosphere, making it feel like a true journey back in time. The high quality of the sets is such that they are frequently used as filming locations for Japanese television dramas and movies.
Opened on April 23, 1986, the park blends the culture of the Edo period with elements of the Sengoku (Warring States) period. It became widely recognized in the 1990s through its charming advertisements featuring "Nyanmage," a cat character with a traditional topknot hairstyle. The facilities and sets serve as a visual gateway to understanding the lifestyles and cultural nuances of historical Japan.
The park features major attractions such as the Great Ninja Theater and various outdoor stages. Here, visitors can witness high-energy performances featuring characters inspired by legendary figures like Sanada Yukimura and Sarutobi Sasuke. Walking through the reconstructed streets allows you to experience the architectural styles of the era. Please note that the "Filming Village" is a professional open-set studio for movies and TV, which is not accessible to general visitors.
Operating hours vary by season. During the Summer Season (March 20 – November 30), the park is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. During the Winter Season (December 1 – March 19), it is open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. For those looking for a shorter visit, "Afternoon Tickets" (Gogo Tegata) are available: during the Summer Season, entry is permitted after 2:00 PM, and during the Winter Season, after 1:00 PM. This allows you to enjoy the changing seasonal atmosphere of the different districts.
Visitors can engage in various activities, including Edo-period vocational experiences and ninja-related challenges. You can also enjoy authentic Edo-style dining, such as Soba, Udon, and traditional bento boxes, providing a multi-sensory way to experience Japanese history.
Edo Wonderland is located in the Kinugawa Onsen area of Nikko, Tochigi. It is easily integrated into a broader Nikko sightseeing itinerary, which often includes famous sites like Nikko Toshogu Shrine. The nearest station is Kinugawa Onsen Station.
