Nikka Whisky Sendai Factory (Miyagikyo Distillery) is a premier whisky production hub located in Aoba Ward, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. Established in 1969, this distillery serves as the second major facility for Nikka Whisky, producing both single malt and grain whiskies. Spanning 200,000 square meters, the site is surrounded by the Hirose and Shinagawa Rivers, creating a lush, natural environment. The region is known for its frequent mist and humid climate, which plays a vital role in the aging process of the whisky barrels.
The establishment of this distillery was deeply influenced by the vision of Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka Whisky. Records show that Taketsuru decided to build the factory here after being impressed by the quality of the local river water, which perfectly complemented the flavor of his Black Nikka blends. Often referred to as the 'Lowland Miyagikyo' to evoke the spirit of the Scottish Lowlands, it stands alongside the Yoichi Distillery in Hokkaido as a cornerstone of Japanese whisky culture. The distillery has also earned international prestige, being designated as an SMWS (Scotch Malt Whisky Society) accredited distillery.

The facility is equipped with specialized equipment essential for whisky production. The most striking feature is the Kiln Tower, characterized by its unique 'Pagoda Roof,' which serves as the distillery's symbol. Visitors can observe various stages of production, including the distillation building with its pot stills, the mashing building for the initial stages, and the cooperage building where whisky barrels are handcrafted. The grounds also feature the 'Nikka Pond,' where you can observe local wildlife, such as swans, amidst the serene natural landscape.
The distillery offers different charms depending on the season. From October to November, the 'Momiji-go' free shuttle bus runs for guests staying at nearby Sakunami Onsen, allowing you to enjoy the distillery's scenery alongside the vibrant autumn foliage. In summer, events are sometimes held near the Shinagawa River area. Tours are typically divided into morning (9:00–11:30) and afternoon (12:30–15:30) sessions, providing the best light to see the contrast between the architectural structures and the surrounding nature.
The Guest Hall offers a chance to check the latest products and purchase exclusive items that can only be found here. It is a great place to find unique souvenirs from the Sendai Factory. Additionally, specialized tours allow for whisky tasting, providing a deeper understanding of the flavors and the craftsmanship behind every drop. It is a multi-sensory experience where you can learn about the history, architecture, and the natural environment through sight and taste.
Located in the western part of Sendai City, the distillery is close to the famous Sakunami Onsen hot spring area. A common travel route involves visiting the distillery and then relaxing in the hot springs. The area is highly regarded for its scenic riverbanks and the beautiful architecture of the pagoda-roofed buildings, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers.
