Kankyo Bridge (Kankyo-kyo) is a historic stone arch bridge located in Oita Prefecture. Meaning "a bridge like a rainbow crossing a valley," this magnificent structure was completed in 1824 (Bunsei 7) during the late Edo period. Built using numerous cut stones of Aso welded tuff, its robust construction and unique aesthetic beauty have earned it the designation as a National Important Cultural Property. This bridge was built to overcome a difficult passage on a vital route within the former Usuki Domain. To connect the routes between Mie-machi and Usuki, local merchants pooled their resources to fund the construction, overcoming the geographical barrier of the deep valley. Since its completion in 1824, it has played a crucial role in the transportation and development of the region. The use of Aso welded tuff reflects the advanced civil engineering techniques of the era and serves as a cultural legacy of the community's collaborative spirit.
