The Niigata City Museum of Art is a municipal art museum established on October 13, 1985, on the site of the former Niigata Prison. Operating under the motto "See, Create, and Speak," the museum has evolved since 2012 to embrace five core principles: "Discovery," "Learning," "Living," "Connecting," and "Trust." The museum's history dates back to its opening in 1985. The building itself is a significant cultural asset, designed by the famous architect Kunio Maekawa, a native of Niigata. The collection is also enriched by many works donated from the former "BSN Niigata Museum" that once stood near the Niigata Prefectural Office. The museum's collection is organized around three themes: "Niigata's Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow," "19th-20th Century Art," and "21st Century Art."
