Nihonkoku Kaen is a magnificent botanical garden boasting a vast area located in Ikawa Town, Minamiakita District, Akita Prefecture. Spanning approximately 40 hectares, the garden is home to an incredible collection of about 2,000 cherry trees representing 200 different species. This makes the spring season an overwhelming spectacle of color and beauty. Beyond the cherry blossoms, the garden is meticulously maintained with rose gardens and azalea displays, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the changing beauty of nature throughout the four seasons.
The history of the cherry trees here began with a systematic planting project between 1972 and 1974. In 1973, the garden was recognized as one of the "Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots to Leave for Our Children" by the Asahi Shimbun newspaper, representing Akita Prefecture alongside Odate City's Shiroyama Park. It was also selected as one of the "30 New Scenic Views of Akita" by the Akita Kaisho Shinpo in 1977, establishing its status as a vital regional tourism resource. The history of the area is also deeply connected to the railway, with the opening of JR Ikawa Sakura Station in 1995, which features a bronze statue commemorating the station's establishment.
The greatest draw is the spring cherry blossom season. The sight of 200 different varieties in full bloom is truly breathtaking. During this period, the "Sakura Festival" is held, featuring evening illuminations that create a dreamlike, ethereal atmosphere. In addition to the blossoms, the garden features rose gardens, azaleas, spacious lawn areas, and sports facilities, making it a perfect place to spend a relaxing time surrounded by nature.
Spring (Cherry Blossom Season) is the most spectacular time to visit. The night illuminations are particularly popular, offering a mystical view of the trees that differs greatly from the daytime scenery. We also recommend visiting during the seasons when roses or azaleas are in bloom to experience the diverse floral beauty of the garden.
With its vast grounds, you can enjoy leisurely strolls while feeling close to nature. The facility also includes sports amenities such as tennis courts, pitter golf, and ground golf, allowing for active recreation in a serene environment. It is an ideal destination for families and friends to refresh themselves in a wide-open space.
The JR East "Ikawa Sakura Station" is located very close to the park. This station shares a close bond with the garden, symbolized by the bronze statue "Mother and Child: Love" installed at the station to mark its opening in 1995. The surrounding area is rich in natural beauty, offering a quintessential experience of Akita's scenic landscapes.
As the park is quite large and set in a natural environment, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please prepare clothing suitable for the season and weather, as temperatures can fluctuate. While sports facilities like tennis courts are available, please observe local manners and rules when using them.
