Nihon Canyon, located in Fukaura Town, Tsugaru District, Aomori Prefecture, is an artistic natural landscape shaped by the elements. As the name suggests, the view is so dynamic it evokes the feeling of exploring a canyon abroad. The most striking feature is the massive, white-colored rock walls and steep cliffs. Under a clear blue sky, the gleaming white rock faces create a vivid contrast against the surrounding lush greenery and deep blue sky, leaving visitors in awe. This location possesses a rare, mystical atmosphere that stands apart from typical Japanese landscapes.
This region is situated to the west of the Shirakami-Sanchi mountain range and has long been blessed with a rich natural environment. The white cliffs, where geological layers are exposed, were formed through eons of natural erosion, serving as a precious landscape that allows one to feel the history of the Earth. The surrounding area is also home to the 'Juniko' area, characterized by 33 lakes and ponds nestled within a primeval beech forest, illustrating the delicate balance and richness of this ecosystem. As a symbol of nature's wonder, this site has been carefully preserved by the local community.

The most notable feature is undoubtedly the 'White Cliffs.' The way the massive rock masses overlap, exposing beautiful geological layers, is truly a masterpiece of natural sculpture. The expression of the rock face changes every moment depending on the angle of the light. On sunny days, the white walls reflect the sunlight brilliantly, reaching a peak of contrast with the surrounding greenery. Additionally, the viewpoints overlooking the terrain below the cliffs are top-tier locations for photography enthusiasts looking to capture the essence of natural beauty.
The charm of Nihon Canyon changes with the seasons and the time of day. The scenery is particularly striking during midday when the sun is high, or in the afternoon when light hits at an angle, emphasizing the textures and depth of the rock faces. In winter, the area transforms into a mystical 'white world' as the white cliffs blend seamlessly with the surrounding snow-covered landscape. During the season of fresh greenery, the contrast between the vibrant leaves and the white stone is exceptionally beautiful, making it a perfect time for outdoor enthusiasts.
This area is primarily focused on enjoying the natural landscape. Visitors can enjoy hiking and nature walks while taking in the breathtaking views. Photography is also a very popular activity here, as travelers seek to capture the shifting light and textures. It is a place where you can listen to the sounds of nature in silence and enjoy a relaxing time away from daily life. Through a stroll through this environment, you can truly feel the breath of the Earth.
There are many nature-rich spots nearby. The 'Juniko' area, a group of 33 lakes and ponds surrounded by primeval beech forests, is an excellent place for a walk.
