The Nitchusen Line Weeping Cherry Blossom path is a breathtaking destination in Kitakata City, Fukushima Prefecture. Stretching approximately 3km, the path is lined with about 1,000 weeping cherry trees (shidarezakura). This unique landscape was created by repurposing the former path of the Nitchusen railway line into a dedicated pedestrian and bicycle path. The result is a beautiful fusion of railway history and natural beauty, where visitors can walk through a magnificent tunnel of blossoms during the spring season.
The path is built upon the abandoned tracks of the former Nitchusen Line. After the railway ceased operations, the area was revitalized as a scenic walking and cycling path to preserve the local landscape and history. By transforming the historical railway site into a famous cherry blossom spot, the area serves as a living testament to the region's industrial past and its natural seasonal beauty.
The most striking feature is the dense canopy of approximately 1,000 weeping cherry trees. In certain sections, the branches hang low, creating a magical "cherry blossom tunnel" effect. Additionally, a vintage steam locomotive (SL) is displayed along the path, providing a nostalgic touch that connects the beauty of the flowers with the history of the railway. The combination of the historic locomotive and the flowing branches of the weeping cherries makes this a truly unique photographic spot.
The peak bloom typically occurs from mid-April to late April. During this period, special illumination events are held, such as the Nitchusen Line Shidarezakura Light-up. Visiting at night allows you to experience a completely different, ethereal atmosphere as the illuminated blossoms glow against the dark sky. It is highly recommended to check local event schedules before your visit to ensure you don't miss the light-up displays.
