Nichiyou-ichi is a traditional street market held on Otesuji in Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture, boasting a rich history of over 300 years. Originating in 1690 (the Genroku era), this market unfolds every Sunday against the historic backdrop of the castle town beneath Kochi Castle. Stretching approximately 1 km, about 300 stalls line the street, offering a vast variety of goods including fresh vegetables, fruits, seafood, hardware, traditional blades, plants, antiques, and even livestock. It is a quintessential Kochi experience where locals shop for daily necessities and tourists gather to soak in the local atmosphere.
The origins of this market date back to 1690, making it a living piece of history that has evolved alongside the culture of Kochi. Over the centuries, it has maintained its form as a market deeply connected to the daily lives of local residents. Because it is held in the historic Otesuji area near the castle, the market is an integral part of the city's cultural heritage. This weekly Sunday tradition is a cherished way for the community to preserve its customs and connection to the land.

The greatest charm of the Sunday Market is the overwhelming variety and number of vendors. You can find seasonal treasures such as fresh fruit tomatoes, Buntan (citrus), and Shinataka pears, alongside local delicacies like chirimen-jako (small dried fish), sushi, and yakitori. The selection also includes household goods, crafts, antiques, garden stones, and plants. The sight of colorful tents lining the wide street, accompanied by the energetic sounds of the local Tosa dialect, creates a uniquely vibrant atmosphere that you won't find anywhere else.
The market operates from approximately 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM. It is highly recommended to visit in the early morning when the energy is at its peak and the freshest produce and goods are still available. While the market is lively throughout the morning, many popular items may sell out by the afternoon. Please note that the market is NOT held on January 1st, 2nd, or during the Yosakoi Festival period (August 10th–12th).
Beyond shopping, the market offers a chance to dive into the local food culture. You can try famous street foods like 'Imo-ten' (sweet potato tempura) or 'Ice-kulin' (a local shaved ice treat). Engaging in brief conversations with the stall owners is a wonderful way to learn about local ingredients and customs. Walking through the market while enjoying these snacks is a quintessential way to experience the daily vitality of Kochi.
The market is located on Otesuji in Kochi City, very close to Kochi Castle and Kochi Station. The area is well-equipped with hotels, making it a convenient base for travelers. It is also centrally located, providing easy access to famous local dining spots like the 'Hirome Market.' A popular sightseeing route often combines a visit to Kochi Castle with a stroll through the Sunday Market.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as the market stretches a long distance along the sidewalk. It is also helpful to bring an eco-bag for your purchases. Since many stalls are small-scale, please carry cash, as most vendors primarily accept cash payments. While some interaction is possible, English support may be limited. No reservations are required, but arriving early is advised for popular items.
