Negoro-ji is the 82nd temple of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, located in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture. As a temple of the Tendai sect, it sits on the slopes of Mt. Aomine, the main peak of the Shiki-dai mountain range. This site is a highly prestigious sacred area, believed to have been identified by Kobo Daishi (Kukai) as a perfect location for esoteric Buddhist training. The name 'Negoro-ji' originates from the fragrant sacred wood that once grew here, and visitors are still greeted by a sense of profound history and refreshing air. It is a place where natural beauty and spiritual peace converge.
The history of the temple dates back to the era of Kobo Daishi. It is said that during the Koin era (810–824), Kukai visited this land and perceived the Five Wisdom Buddhas within the five peaks of Shiki-dai. Kukai established the 'Kazo-in' temple on Mt. Aomine to worship the Five Great Wisdom Kings. Later, in 832, a figure named Chisho Daishi visited and, following a divine instruction from the deity of the mountain, established 'Senju-in' using a highly fragrant wood to carve a Kannon statue. This fragrant wood is said to be the origin of the temple's name. Although the temple faced destruction during wars throughout history, it was later restored by Matsudaira Yorishige, the first lord of the Takamatsu Domain. Today, it remains a cherished site of the Tendai sect.
The temple grounds are dotted with various historical buildings and stone statues. The main deity is the Thousand-Armed Kannon, and the main hall houses a secret Buddha statue that is only revealed once every 33 years. Visitors can explore the Sanmon (Nio Gate), the stone steps leading to the main hall, the Daishi-do (dedicated to Kobo Daishi), and the Godai-do. You can also encounter local legends through stone statues and scrolls related to the 'Ushiki' (Ox-Demon) legend. Additionally, the site holds historical significance through the remains of the 'Hakko Keyaki' tree, which was once said to be 1,600 years old.
Negoro-ji reveals a different face with every season. It is particularly famous as a premier autumn foliage spot from October to November, when the vibrant colors of the leaves decorate the temple grounds. Because of this, the area can become quite crowded during the peak season. The temple is open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Visiting in the early morning is highly recommended to experience the most tranquil and serene atmosphere before the crowds arrive. Please note that parking and surrounding roads may be congested during the autumn season.
Here, you can truly feel the culture of the Shikoku Henro (pilgrimage). As the 82nd station, you can experience the atmosphere of a place where pilgrims walk step by step toward spiritual enlightenment. The presence of the 'Ushiki' legend through various exhibits offers a unique glimpse into Japanese folklore and traditional monsters. The process of climbing the historical stone steps toward the main hall is a meditative experience in itself, allowing for a moment of inner reflection in a quiet, natural environment.
The Shiki-dai area surrounding Negoro-ji is rich in nature and offers easy access to Takamatsu City. It serves as an excellent base for sightseeing. The area also features various facilities to enjoy Kagawa's famous 'Udon' noodles and several accommodation options, making it easy to integrate this visit into a larger Shikoku pilgrimage itinerary.
