This 6-meter high giant rock is home to various trees such as Japanese cedar, beech, and maple, which grow directly from the stone as if their roots were reaching out like wild hair. This sight symbolizes the overwhelming vitality of nature and the resilience of plants adapting to harsh environments. Surrounded by lush forests, it is a place where you can quietly admire the sculptural beauty of nature in complete tranquility.
The name and unique shape of Nekobari Rock carry a deep story. The name is said to come from the way the tree roots appear to be 'struggling' or 'working hard' as they spread across the rock surface toward the ground. The site also holds cultural significance as a filming location for the movie 'Tsurikichi Sanpei,' based on the manga by Akita-born author Takao Yaguchi. It is a cherished local landmark for both nature lovers and film enthusiasts.
The greatest attraction is the symbiotic relationship between the massive rock and the trees. The sight of plants growing powerfully from the summit and the complex, intertwined roots creates a lasting impression. Interestingly, depending on the angle, some visitors find the rock's shape resembles the popular character 'Totoro.' The changing colors of the surrounding foliage and vegetation offer a unique visual delight that varies with each season.
Nekobari Rock offers beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons. From spring to summer, you can enjoy the vibrant fresh greenery and the clarity of the nearby stream. In autumn (around October to November), the surrounding foliage turns brilliant colors, creating a stunning contrast with the rock and the river. During winter (late November to mid-April), please be aware that snow may cause road closures in the area. Visiting during daylight hours is recommended to clearly appreciate the textures of the rock and the intricate details of the plants.

After walking a few hundred meters along a forest road, you are rewarded with a sense of peace away from daily life.
