Nawagaike is a natural lake located at an altitude of approximately 800 meters in the mountains of Mt. Kiyomizu, eastern Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture. Despite having no significant rivers flowing into it, the pond is constantly filled by the abundant spring water from Mt. Kiyomizu. Surrounded on three sides by primeval forests, the area is filled with natural silence and vitality. It is a place of such exceptional natural beauty that it was once visited by the Emperor and Empress of Japan.
The pond is steeped in an intriguing "Dragon God Legend." It is said that during the Heian period, the warrior Taira no Funa (a figure active during the Genpei War era) demonstrated such courage when crossing a bridge in Omi Province that the Dragon God was moved and granted him a gift to alleviate water shortages. Based on this legend, it is said that after people prayed in the mountains, water began to spring forth overnight, giving the pond its name, "Nawagaike."
Furthermore, the pond is deeply connected to local life. Every year on July 15th, representatives from the Minotani and Kitano districts—whose areas rely on the pond for irrigation water—hold a ritual to offer sacred food to the Nawagaike-hime Shrine. This tradition of expressing gratitude for nature's blessings is still carefully preserved today.
The greatest attraction is the colony of Skunk Cabbage (Lysichiton callosum) spreading across the wetlands surrounding the pond. As a northern plant, this area is considered near the southwestern limit of its natural habitat. In May, the sight of the white blooms is truly breathtaking. The reflection of the fresh green trees on the calm lake surface is a masterpiece of nature. A well-maintained wooden boardwalk allows visitors to enjoy a leisurely stroll while observing the local flora.
The best time to visit is May, during the Skunk Cabbage blooming season. This is when the vitality of the plants and the fresh greenery are at their peak, making it ideal for photography and nature observation. The summer season is also beautiful, offering a healing experience with the stunning green gradations reflected on the water. Since this is a scenic destination, visiting during daylight hours will ensure you see the most beautiful views.
The primary activities here are nature observation and hiking. While walking along the maintained wooden paths, you can experience the ecosystem of the primeval forest and see the natural monument, Skunk Cabbage, up close. A walk through this landscape, while contemplating its ancient legends, offers a much deeper experience than a simple walk. It is a perfect destination for families and landscape photographers.
There are several other spots nearby where you can feel the abundance of water and nature. For example, the "Meoto Waterfall" (Married Waterfalls) is known for the mysterious phenomenon where the thickness of the two falls changes depending on the season. You can also find various other ponds and spring water spots related to the local water resources, making it a great part of a larger nature tour through Nanto City.
As this is a natural area, comfortable walking shoes and clothing are essential. Please be careful on the wooden paths in the wetland areas. Since temperatures can fluctuate, it is wise to bring layers. Please ensure you carry all trash back with you and do not disturb the plants or the environment. While there are no specific fees or facilities, please follow basic outdoor etiquette to enjoy the serene atmosphere.
