Naruto City Awa Odori is a spectacular Awa Odori event held over three days from August 9th to August 11th in Naruto City, Tokishima Prefecture. While Awa Odori festivals take place across the prefecture during this season, the Naruto City event serves as a prestigious precursor, setting the stage for the festivities. The charm lies in the seamless harmony between the energetic dances and the natural beauty of the Naruto landscape.
Awa Odori is the quintessential traditional dance of Tokushima Prefecture, and it has been deeply cherished in Naruto City for generations. The festival is a cornerstone of local identity, with various "Ren" (dance groups) participating to strengthen community bonds. The cultural festivities extend beyond the main dates: on August 7th, the Naruto City Summer Night Fireworks Display illuminates the Nuyo River, and on August 8th, the Naruto City Selected Awa Odori takes place at the Naruto City Cultural Hall, creating a multi-layered cultural experience.
The performances are spread across several iconic locations. Along the main street west of Naruto Station, two paid viewing areas are established for a premium experience. Naruto Park's Senjojiki area also hosts performances, including morning sessions on the first day (August 9th). Additionally, the "Awa Odori IN Uzunomichi" offers a unique way to view the dance near the Great Naruto Bridge, allowing spectators to witness the dance in harmony with the famous swirling whirlpools.
The main event is strictly limited to the three days from August 9th to 11th, a period when Naruto City is at its most vibrant. To fully enjoy the festivities, consider the related events: the fireworks on August 7th and the selected dance on August 8th. While the main performances are centered around the evening and night, the morning sessions at Naruto Park allow you to enjoy the dance alongside the beautiful daytime scenery.
Visitors can witness various "Ren" groups, such as Uzushio-ren, Uzuki-ren, Taiko-ren, Naruto Fufufu-ren, Naruto-shi-ren, Mangetsu-ren, and Nacho-ren. The atmosphere near the paid viewing areas is filled with local energy and excitement. For a truly one-of-a-kind experience, the performances near the Great Naruto Bridge's "Uzunomichi" provide a breathtaking view of the ocean and the swirling currents.
The performance area is centered around the main thoroughfare extending west from Naruto Station. This area includes Daidogintenkai and the vicinity of the Dilex discount store. During the festival, these streets become pedestrian-only zones due to traffic regulations. The surrounding area also offers beautiful natural landscapes, including Naruto Park and the Great Naruto Bridge, perfect for sightseeing.
As large crowds are expected, preparation is key. We recommend carrying cash for local food stalls and nearby shops. Since the streets become pedestrian-only zones, please allow plenty of time for travel. When taking photos, please be mindful of others and maintain good etiquette. Regarding accessibility, please check the status of paid viewing areas in advance, as the pedestrian zones may have uneven surfaces and high congestion.
