The Sasate River (Kura no Machi) area in Tochigi City, Tochigi Prefecture, is a beautifully preserved historical district. The area is characterized by its traditional architecture, particularly the many 'Dozo' (earthen storehouses) and black-painted merchant houses that date from the Edo period to the modern era. Historically, this area developed as a vital hub for river transport along the Sasate River, and the preservation of these black and white storehouses maintains a unique aesthetic. This region flourished as a vital post town for travelers heading toward Nikko during the Edo period, and as a prosperous merchant town connected to Edo (modern-day Tokyo) via river transport. At its peak, it was known as the commercial center of Northern Kanto. Most of the existing buildings were constructed between the late Edo and mid-Meiji periods. Because the area was spared from air raids during the war, many architectural styles from the Taisho and early Showa eras remain intact. Since the late 20th century, significant efforts have been made to preserve the streetscape and develop it as a cultural tourism resource.
The banks of the Sasate River are lined with striking black-painted storehouses and white-walled earthen structures, creating a distinctive and photogenic scenery. A major highlight is the presence of approximately 100,000 koi fish, which are an integral part of the river's living landscape. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing river cruise on a sightseeing boat to see the town from a different perspective.
