Narita Sakura no Yama is a park located in the Komaiino district of Narita City, Chiba Prefecture, positioned just north of the Narita International Airport runway. The park covers an area of approximately 4.9 hectares and sits on a gentle hill. Its most distinctive feature is the ability to witness the takeoff and landing of aircraft at close range, framed by the beauty of approximately 500 cherry blossom trees. This unique combination of aviation and nature has made it a popular location for television broadcasts and media filming, establishing it as a must-visit landmark in the Narita area.
The area represents a unique coexistence of natural beauty and modern aviation infrastructure, shaped by the operations of Narita International Airport. The landscape maintains a harmony between the traditional culture of cherry blossom viewing and the dynamic energy of one of Japan's primary international gateways. Today, it serves as a place where both aviation enthusiasts and nature lovers gather to observe seasonal phenomena and the rhythmic movement of aircraft.
The park features a diverse variety of cherry trees, including Somei-yoshino, Yamazakura, Shidarezakura (weeping cherry), and Higan Sakura. Equipped with observation decks and benches, visitors can watch aircraft maneuvering toward the runway through the canopy of blossoms. Particularly under north wind conditions, you can observe aircraft taking off toward the north side of the runway from the fence area facing Prefectural Road 44. Additionally, the on-site 'Sora no Eki Sakura-kan' serves as a local specialty shop where you can purchase regional products and souvenirs.
The best time to visit is from late March to mid-May, when the different varieties of cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The peak season from late March to April offers the most iconic experience of combining cherry blossoms with the sight of aircraft. While daytime provides the clearest views of aircraft movements, please note that the park is open from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM daily. There is no official information regarding nighttime illuminations.
Visitors can enjoy the simultaneous experience of observing natural landscapes and aviation activity. You can relax on the observation decks or benches while watching planes land or depart. At 'Sora no Eki Sakura-kan,' you can also experience local culture by purchasing fresh vegetables from Chiba Prefecture and various Narita-themed souvenirs, allowing you to bring a piece of the local flavors home with you.
The park is accessible via community buses and Narita Airport Transit buses, with services running from the Narita Airport Terminal 2. There are also convenience stores located near the park. For those interested in further exploration, the historic Narita-san Shinsho-ji Temple is also located within the Narita City area.
Please adhere to the following rules: the use of fire (bonfires, cooking, or fireworks) and the operation of drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) are strictly prohibited. Picking plants or leaving trash outside of designated areas is also forbidden. Regarding photography, professional filming requires permission: 330 JPY per camera/day for photography and 3,300 JPY per 2-hour session for film/video production. While parking and restrooms are available, we highly recommend using public transportation during the busy cherry blossom season to avoid congestion.
